Parkersburg Iowa tornado.

Iowa got wracked with a round of tornados Sunday night, and this little farm town of Parkersburg was nearly leveled.

Over 220 homes completely destroyed, several people killed, and tons injured.

I used to be the \'phone man\' for Parkersburg, and cannot believe the destruction there. Many of the homes and businesses that I knew are just gone.

It\'s about thirty miles from where I live, but the same tornado leveled a few homes only a few miles from us.

During the whole time, although our tornado sirens went off, we didn\'t get a drop of rain...the storm just skirted around us.

It\'s one thing to see destruction like this on the news, and unfortunately it\'s far too easy to distance yourself from it.

Mother nature can be a serious bitch at times....

Its amazing the destruction a storm like that can do..purely devastating. the same weather system did some major storms near my mothers outside of Minneapolis and there was a tornado about 4 miles from her house.

Just heard another horrific part of this story.

One of my co-workers lives on a farm that was right in the path of this mile wide tornado. According to the storm spotters, the tornado \'jumped\' her house, came back down, and leveled more farmplaces to the east.

Anyhow, the horrific thing is she said they spend all of yesterday helping neighbors putting cattle down that were too far gone to save. Some had 2x4\'s or steel sticking through them. Walking around with boards sticking out of them!

She said several actually had thier tails pulled right off.

even looking at the pictures it’s so hard to imagine the destruction. Prayers to all effected

makes me sick to think of having to put a bullet between the eyes of those suffering animals, but it’s the kindest thing that can be done for them.

Seems like no matter where one lives there is some sort of \'act of God\' type of disaster lurking.

Man, those tornadoes are just devistating. Hard to believe how much power they have............sad.

And they are calling this one a F3....

There are two more ranks in power above that!

The power of nature is astounding.

Frightening.
I\'ve only seen one tornado in my life, and it was a very very small one that only touched down for about thirty or forty seconds, then moved on.

That was more than enough for me, really.

That kind of devastation can only be achieved by two things in the world. Nature, and man.

Is there any kind of tornado-aid auction or anything being organized?

I think just giving to your local RED CROSS type charity would be best. With the amount of tragedies happening around the globe, every penny would be appreciated.

I heard the death count on that Chinese earthquake is now over 61,000. That is such a horrific tragedy. That would be well over half of all the folks that live in my local area.

What\'s the count in Myanmar? Natural disaster totally exacerbated by their government.

That number hasn\'t yet factor in the missing people.

I can\'t say I feel too safe lately. Earthquakes, tornados, tidal waves... These things that we have no control over are the most scary imo.

Doesn\'t help I live in the Kansai region of Japan that had a pretty bad quake a decade or so ago. x_X

My newly-wedded cousin and his wife live in Hugo only about 3/4 of a mile from where the tornado killed that poor little boy, may he rest in peace.

My cousin was out in Vegas for a convention and his wife was just leaving their house when the thing hit. Luckily she wasn\'t injured or anything and their house was unscathed. The houses just down their block were trashed though.

Glad to see your ok, Vike. My thoughts are with you and your community.
Let\'s keep those who were affected, whether it be Minnesota, Iowa, Kansas or Oklahoma in our prayers shall we?

It\'s not often I quote myself....

But, they\'ve readjusted the \'power\' level of this storm. They are now calling it an EF 5, which is the highest category.

An interesting sidebar to it, is people as far away as 150 miles are finding personal documents and pictures that were sucked away from those affected during the storm.

So much devastation by natural occurances recently.

That tornado reminded me of a series about storm chasers. They were trying to get data and also film inside of one but they missed a huge tornado. They were bumbed out about missing the opportunity but when they saw the results on the news and went to the area to assess it (the data they were correlating is to help with predictions and thereby give more warning to people), all therir own personal issues with who made the errors and so on went. That was an F5, too. The destruction caused was very sobering.

I read that as well in the paper this mornign during my coffee break. That\'s incredible about the documents, if not a little erie. Just think about the forces that can suck something up into the very top of a supercell front and chuck it how many counties over. That\'s incredible.

And going off of what Roger was saying, that series was called Storm Chasers wasn\'t it? They had that TIV vehicle they were trying to get into a twister with. The show was interesting, but the guy was an idiot about not being able to get into a tornado while it\'s busy destroying lives. Then the episode that Roger mentioned sobered him up a bit, but even then it annoyed me that he was oh so bummed about missing out on a tornado while peoples\' lives are destroyed by something like that.

My cousin is supposed to call tonight from Hugo to let us know how the meeting with the insurance agencies went for his neighborhood.
