Well, I am pretty sure that Paypal is going to charge money for any transactions using their site, regardless of the account type. It stinks, I know.

It\'s the cost of doing business. Paypal has a personal account (no charge for accepting money with it), but you can\'t accept credit cards with it. It\'s only supposed to be used to send money to family members and such. No doubt they will eliminate it altogether one of these days. If you want to accept credit cards (and most people will assume if you take Paypal, you can take credit cards) then you need a Premier or Business account. I don\'t know that there is much difference between them. By the way, you are not allowed to pass the fees of Paypal onto your customers directly, Paypal will cancel your account if they find you doing so. Instead, just up your asking price to cover for the amount that you know Paypal will cost you. It usually costs 30 cents plus 2.9% of the transaction (3.9% if its an international transaction). Rates go down if you have high volume, but by high, I mean multiple thousands of dollars a month high. Simply think of it as the cost of doing business, folks with a storefront have to pay a similiar fee every time someone uses a credit card, but they just figure that into their overhead costs, and ask a little bit more per item to cover the fees.

@Katie: exactly what I was gonna say, kinda...
how much does your bank charge you for writing a letter?
try starting with a premier account & if you find your turnover is growing then upgrade
overall I\'ve found their charges reasonable for the service they provide

Yeah, what Katie said.

I had been using a basic paypal account, but then someone needed to pay me by credit card so I upgraded. The costs are a bit annoying, but relatively small.

I have opened a second personal account, that way if its not a CC transaction I don\'t cop any fees.

I use paypal on my site. The buy now buttons are cumbersome, but better than some of the others out there. I use a paypal donations box for the postage, so people can write in the amount. It is very cumbersome, but it saves the customer money. Be sure you have a secure form to do transactions. There is a bunch of scams out now.
