this is the winner of the Pit of the Oni, one year anniversary, painting contest...

this is the first mini in what i am calling the Gamer\'s Series, minis painted to sell specifically to gamers...
these are minis painted to what i call high-tabletop standard, \'eavy metal standard, or studio standard...
the series will mainly be GW, Privateer Press, and Infinity minis, since those seem to be the most played of all the miniature games...

the Gamer\'s Series will be minis such as a character model, a monstrous creature, or an army leader (something that a player will generally only need one of)...
the minis will be painted as replicas of the studio minis that gamers drool over in rulebooks, magazines, and catalogs...
painted to the studio\'s own standards, they will be an affordable addition to any collector\'s shelf, and yet be based and varnished for gaming (ready to take pride of place in any gamer\'s army)...

when i posted the pics for the contest, generulpoleaxe pointed out that i had not painted the studs on the left arm silver...
woops...
that has been remedied, and a few little spots have been touched up...
i also tried a new background, a more neutral beige, instead of stark white...
hopefully there is a little more richness in the blue now...

Don\'t really care for the color scheme. Maybe the fists are too bright in comparison to the rest, but looking at the painting itself, it is all done spectacularly if even not to my tastes. He got an 8 from me. The banner is great.

Looking good. I really like the colour scheme of the Crimson fists, but perhaps as Shadzar points out I like them even better with a slightly darker red. I think that red is such a strong colour in this colourscheme that for example the fist draws too much attention from the head. I really like the painting of the helmet btw. and yes the studs do make a distinct difference. The only real advice for the paintjob would give is to try to make the lines slightly thinner when using the lining technique. I\'m thinking going the direction of the EM team as you have expressed several times that you like their work. It is doable using little paint and the side of the brush. Another thing you could try is to make the lines more gradual and highlight them even more on top of hard edges etc. to make them look a bit more like light reflections. As they come across now I find them a little bit monotenous. Great job none the less, I really love the rich colours you often work with.

it\'s always nice to have a great painter take the time to comment on my minis...
i agree with the thickness of the highlights...
i do have a pretty heavy-handed style...

funny enough, my next piece (which was not painted to a deadline, like this guy was) will have more hotspot highlights...
i was playin\' around with Mike Mcvey\'s style of painting Blood Angels, and when i play, i get to change up my style a bit...

ironic that i put your suggestion into practice only a couple months back...

I think it really depends on the look you are going for. The heavy handed highlights (hows that for aliteration?) works very well if you are going for a more \'cartoony\' look.

I think this has a great stylized appearance.

i am definitely workin\' on perfectin\' my \"cartoony\" style...
i really think that we should each publish our painting manifesto in the discussion or painting forum...

i have been wrestlin\' with this for a while, as i think that most people vote based on the painting style that they are into, and not the painting style that the painter was tryin\' to achieve...

i am all about developin\' a style based on graphic novels, grafitti, and traditional tattoos...
my main influence has always been the \'eavy metal team since back in the Mike Mcvey gave it a coherent direction and style...

that said, it never hurts to try new things...

the armour is exactly how i wanted it to look, so i\'m happy...
