Peebs' WIP thread.

Hello! I've been lurking round here for a while now, admiring all the great painting you lot do, and thought it was time I started a WIP thread of my own. I really enjoyed participating in the orc shaman painting group (even though mine still isn't finished - sorry!) and all the great advice in there made me realise how much more you get out of a forum when you actually participate!

I've been painting for just over two years now and am at a stage where I am happy with my ability to paint a decent looking table-top miniature but really want to push my skills beyond that and try some new techniques.

As I mentioned above, my orc shaman is still very much a work in progress. He will certainly be appearing in here at some point but at the moment I'm lacking that drive to finish him so I've put him to one side and will pick him back up when I'm feeling more motivated. My current project is a hordes model that I've been wanting to paint for a while. I love the sculpt but there is a lot of metal involved, which is something I'm really bad at so I've been avoiding it up to now. I thought it was time I took the plunge though and just to make things more interesting (and possibly disastrous!) I've decided to make my first attempts at nmm. Eek.

Anyway, sorry for all the rambling. Here's the current progress:

Not much to see at the moment - just some base coats and a little shading, but I will be starting on the metals next and will probably need plenty of help then!

Hey! There's Beebop. That's a fun looking mini. I know where your coming from peebs with shelving the ork. But keep at it when you feel like it. I still wanna see it and can't wait to see some more work on this one.

Haha - I think I need that hung on the wall above my desk! I have at least 7 or 8 minis sat there half painted and waiting to be finished but the shaman is definitely head of the queue as I do want to get him done.

Managed to squeeze in 30mins of painting while dinner was cooking, so here's the first bit of work on the blade:

I had a look at some painted versions online first to help me get the light and dark in the right places, which is probably the most intimidating part of nmm for me. Obviously there is a lot of work still to do but I'm a little unsure about how to make it look more metallic without pushing the contrast too much and ending up with a super shiny looking blade (as I don't think that would really fit with the model). I'll keep playing about with it but any tips or advice would be appreciated!

wow just saw the blades peebs IMHO you could push or not push it looks good nice and subtle from here but I gotta say man you picked one hell of a model for a w I p there are so many technical facets to find on that model that all your skills will greatly improve just by the subject matter alone.wheeew that's a nice tough model!

Thank you! There's a lot of smoothing over to do but the placement of the lights and shadows is something I find quite tricky so I'm glad to hear it's looking ok so far.

Thanks, I think I'll darken the shadows some more and maybe add a little more brown in, which will hopefully increase the contrast without me needing to add too much to the highlights.

That's why he's been sat in a drawer still in his box up until now! But as you've said, hopefully I'll have a chance to really improve my technical skills with this one. Thanks for the comment.

Mots actually how I go about things the more laying in of shadows over layers produces I Stanton highlights and more discerning to the eye. It's working in reverse if you will. Iow peeps I think you should go ahead with laying in the darker shades that you mentioned. Again this is me agreeing with what you have stated and to add my 2 cents in how and what I would do is lay in purples with and or the browns so maybe the browns than 1 more shade down even darker with the purples us I learnt along time ago from the team Spain and team France who attend golden demon to use colors that vary as opposed to just adding blacks to shadow in . The rule is the more colors the eye sees (eg browns purples blues etc.) is more aesthetically pleasing to the eye of the viewer so your in the right track here bud. Looks really good so far. And on the other hand I could see it left as is too. Gr8 job peebs. Learning alot so far keep it up. Very informative post!!!
