I hope he directs and doesn\'t act only as the executive producer.
Great - I\'m sure now we\'ll have an adaptation wherein Arwen shows up and shoots down Smaug.
Edit: Sorry for the pessimism - I am happy to see this movie will be made. But I am just tired of pointless changes made after seeing what the fools making the animated Conan movie have done to the original story when they were selling it as a pure version of the original story, so I\'m a litttle grumpy about this stuff

Personally I don\'t care what it is so long as it\'s Tolkein stories being filmed by Jackson! YAY! Now if only Whedon would do more Firefly/Serenity, I would be content.

I\'m with ya on the pointless changes Primeval, stories were perfect as written and they just gotta toss in some screwy bs to hollymood it up, and why did they have to drop Tom he was such a great charecter. :cussing: I\'ve just learned to take the lotr movies and seperate em from the lotr and just think of em as generic fantasy then they\'re pretty cool. Plus on an up note there won\'t be 20 minutes of watchin frodo and sam cry out to each other in way that makes ya wonder just what their relationship entails. All in all I\'ll be happy to see it not enough good fantasy gets made to be too picky.

I honestly think that Arwen\'s increased presence didn\'t hurt the LOTR movies. Why? Because like it or not, Tolkien was writing in a time when women did NOT get major action roles in fantasy stories. And like it or not audiences expect a bit more inclusion nowadays.
Granted, more Arwen makes Eowyn\'s fighting spirit seem less unusual in Return of the King, but their roles (mystic vs. warrior) were kept separate enough that her valour is undiminished IMO.
In conclusion, I do not think Arwen will shoot down Smaug. I think a shaven-headed Matthew McConaughey will fight him with an Apache helicopter.
I think we are outnumbered by people who will just be happy with what they are given just because it is from some particular director or features a particular actor. Don\'t get me wrong, I enjoyed the LOTR films but didn\'t like many of the changes.
NSA - overall, the only thing about Arwen that really ticked me off was her saving the hobbits at the ford. Because of that, up until Eowyn\'s helmet came off, I was convinced Jackson was going to replace her with Arwen. I don\'t mind additions to a story that fit in - that is, that don\'t alter or contradict the original author\'s story. Anything else, to me, is IP theft because the original name is being used to sell a movie but the story is not the same.
Anyway, this is surely a long over-discussed topic, so I\'ll just say that I will hope for the best with The Hobbit!

Great news.. but he\'s so thin.
With every adaptation to film you have to do changes, believe me. Else the book was written for the movies. A by-the-exact-letter-of-the-book film seldom becomes very interesting and I was surprised that he kept so many things and managed to make the world so close to what I had expected. A couple of things felt too hurried though in the first movie.
@Uberdark: When it comes to wellsculpted some of the GW lotr miniatures are the best ever put out by the company, and any company (the plastic elf bowmans are horrible horrible horrible of course). The gaming system is from what I hear very good as well. So all is well.
Do you think Figwit will make an appearence?

I´m looking forward to the Hobbit movie but honestly I would trade it to one episode of Firefly without hesitation.

Since they haven\'t been out of the box for several years, maybe its overdue!
