I read through the articles pertaining to photographing minis. Well, its definitely all well written. However, here\'s my two cents worth to add in:
(1) take note of your depth of field. It controls what is in focus and what is not. Depth of field is approximately controlled between 1/3 distance from the camera to the object and 2/3 distance away from the object. Hence, if you just want focus mainly on the model, set a large aperture size (Eg. f/5.6 or f/8)
(2) To obtain a best coloration, try to obtain 18% grey. Try metering off a neutral color (eg. grey, green or brown) and use this setting to take your model.
(3) Always use a tripod to obtain a clear picture
(4) Avoid using flood light directly on the model. It is harsh and ugly. (Eg. never take pictures with your model standing in mid-day sun). ALso, like what Chern mentioned never flash, at least don\'t use fill-flash (or direct flash) as it will produce harsh shadows. Use either a tissue to cover up your flash (for cheap alternative) or bounce flash or softbox to lighten the direct flashing.
(5) Try filtering to produce different effects on the photographs (ok, what\'s the point when you have electronic software...sigh..)
Photography is writing with light. Hence, to take great photographs, play with the light. That\'s the mantra to photography.
