Hi guys, as I\'ve started posting on here I thought I might as well start up one of these WIP log things. I just started painting this Ltd Ed Pict chieftain from Gripping Beast earlier today so he\'s the lucky candidate.

So far I\'ve done some preliminary work on the chainmail and painted his tunic ready for applying the patterning. Comments as always are welcome and if anyone knows of a good article for modelling heather on bases I\'d appreciate being pointed in the general direction.

The lighting is playing havoc with the highlighting and making the cuff end look really messy for some reason...

Hey Dave! Great to see you active in the forums mate, hope to see you down the club on sunday too!

This is looking great so far- the skin looks a bit pinky, although it may just be unfinished due to it being a WIP.

I absolutley love the pattern on his sleeve- is this a real clan pattern? It kind of reminds me of a Jack in a deck of cards! But Eitherway I do really like it!

As for Heather- I have some decorative grass in a pot on top of my stairs that may surpass, they sell loads of different designs in Wilko\'s (upstairs in the far corner) and I am sure they would have something suitable.

Cheers Dave I\'ll go hunting in Wilkos then. The pattern is a kind of proto-tartan as proper tartans didn\'t appear untill about a thousand years after this bloke snuffed it. More picts soon...

i like the pattern so far but it needs more lines going horizontal and vertical to look like plaid. nice though. cheers

Thanks Uberdark but the challenge is that it\'s not actually meant to be a tartan pattern as these only started to occur in the 16th century or so, over 1000 years after this guy was pushing up the daisies. So what I\'m trying to aim for is something complicated enough to represent a chieftain of some rank, whilst primitive enough to look like a precursor to tartan. I\'m thinking that the cloak will feature more thin lines but less of the thick banding evident on the tunic, although I\'m not quite sure what colours to use. Possibly dark blue/green for the cloak with white/grey lines. What do people think?

BTW here\'s an update:

Appologies for the rubbish photography. I\'m planning on moving to the cloak next followed by the skin and tattoos/warpaint which (possibly) gave the Picts their name :flip:
