Picture Quality downgrade after upload?

I have never noticed this before (which doesnt really mean anything except I haven\'t complained about it yet.. ), but when I uploaded a picture this afternoon, I took a look at it and it seemed fuzzier than the original. I loaded up the picture in explorer from my desktop and, sure enough, the picture on my computer is crisper than the one on CMON.

The photo is under 100k (99k), and it was less than 600 pixels wide (570ish?), so I don\'t think it is being auto-shrunk. Visual comparison leads me to believe they are both the same size. I tried re-uploading, twice, in case the file somehow got damaged during the transfer, and am not getting different results.

Is this how they always look? Have the size and shape requirements changed and I don\'t know it? Is this thread even in the right topic area? <G> Other people\'s pictures don\'t seem to be exceptionally fuzzy. Do I need to have the picture hosted offsite instead?

Just to make it legit, I will post a link to the image (although i am not sure it will work for you guys yet, as I haven\'t been approved...)

Edit: Tried to fix the levels a bit and got the picture size down from 99 to 98k (cut off the bottom a bit more) and i think it helped a bit. http://www.coolminiornot.com/66158

ive noticed the pictures i take look fine to me on my desktop..but when uploaded they are all fuzzy and well...in a word...poopy.
thank goodness im not the only one! i thought it was my computer or something

Check your compression number for .jpg options. Keep it under 10.

I compress at 8.

I\'m not sure I understand how the compression could change how the picture looks once it is uploaded..

If you\'re using Photoshop, use the \'Save for web\' option. It\'ll give you thumbs that you can zoom into showing you the quality after compression. It also uses a slider, so you can keep the quality as high as possible by staying close to the 100k mark. Shoot on your highest res. setting, then reduce the size to 600 px wide/450 px high (whichever is best fit!). Once you have done this \'Save for web\'. Oh, the higher the number you jpeg to, the better the quality! So 10 is MINIMAL compression!

Just make sure you resize BEFORE you compress! HTH

Edit: the photos themselves are a little underexposed - use levels to fix this. You would also benefit from closer shots I think.

I had this happen to me once as well. The official reply from borg was that 99k might be cutting it a bit short - in the future, aim for 95 or even 90 if possible.

What version of photoshop are you looking at? I have 5.0 and I can\'t find anything under file that says \'save for web.\' My help files are corrupted or something, so I can\'t search for it there.

I couldn\'t get any closer without cutting out more of the base than I wanted to, and that was part of the point..

Errr...... Photoshop 5....

Sorry, had 6, then 7 and am now on CS (8). I upgrade regularly! I know what you mean by wanting to get a whole diorama shot, but some extreme closeups as well certainly help people to rate your work.
