Pimpin' Out a Chaos Space Marine Lord

In the minis swap, Benihaha sent me a cool 40K mini, a Chaos Space Marine Lord. While I'm not a 40K player, I was considering how to make this guy really rock. There's just one problem: I'm a stuffy purist at heart, so if I'm going to work on this guy I want to do everything right. I had a few questions for those of you with more experience modeling these chaos-tainted fellows:

1.) Are the different weird heads associated with chaos leaders interchangable, or are the different types associated with particular subgroups of chaos marines? Are there particular types that would be more apropos (or inappropriate) for a chaos space marine lord?

2.) The "mutated" arms and other parts: What's with them?

3.) What iconography is associated with different groups? I've seen a couple of odd symbols and the ubiquitous "chaos arrow", but would like to make sure that any color choices and symbols match each other.

Concerning chaos minis, you can do just about anything you want, as long as you stick to your chosen theme.

Concerning chaos themes...
It sounds to me like you've got a lot to learn XD I reckon you have no prior knowledge about chaos (never played warhammer, wfb or 40K)
There's five main cults;
Slaanesh, the pleasure god. PINK and purple. As long as is it sinful or painfull, (s)he's your god(dess)
Tzeentch, sorcery and change. Blue and gold. Discipline and chaos, mutation, scheming.
Khorne, Blood, death and slaughter. RED. Anything big and mean, close combat.
Nurgle, desease and rot. Browns and greens. Anything rotten, bloated and sick.
Undevided, destruction of all life. Any color. Basicly anything not specific enough for any of the other cults.

That's the basics, but I suggest you do your own research, here on CMON and on google/wiki.

Cheers, Mourner.

which space marine lord was it? Could you post a pic or a link or something? Some of the models are power-specific, and I'd be happy to advise if I knew which one it was. If it's a generic undivided lord then Mourner's advice is all good. It's totally OK to paint an undivided lord as a specific power. Just do a quick search of the galleries for "Nurgle Lord" or "Slaanesh Lord" or whatever and you'll be laughing for colour schemes.

If you're very fluff-inclined, be aware that although there are only 4 chaos gods, there are several space marine legions who follow each god, and some legions who follow multiple gods. Each of these legions has their own iconography, just like a space marine chapter. (CSM have legions, which are big. Loyalist (imperial) marines have chapters, which are about 1000 marines each.) You can also just make up your own legion, if you want.

To be honest, the background to chaos in warhammer 40k is one of the best, if not the best, things about it. There's a huge amount of info. If you can track them down, the two original books about chaos from waaaaaay back in the day (rogue trader, WH40k 1st ed) are brilliant and full of great designs and fluff. The Lost and The Damned is one and Slaves to Darkness is the other. You wont find them in shops, unlikely on ebay, but if you know someone who's got em, they're well worth checking out.

I can go into as much detail as you'd like when it comes to fluff. Let me know what god/legion you're thinking of doing and I can tell you what colour his eyes should be and whether he shaved that morning or not :D

Ooh, there's lovely. That's a nice mini, there. Yeah - he's non-legion specific, but as you say, he lacks for that pustulent dripiness, lascivious fleshiness, and uncontrollable mutation that exemplify nurgle, slaanesh and tzeentch respectively. So, Khorne it is.

Blood for da blood god, skulls for da frone of skulls :) (or, as the mantra goes over here "paint for the paint god, bitz for the box of bitz...")

or not, as the case may be...

Before I start on colours, some fluff will help explain details - I'm gonna try for a potted history of the chaos legions in one small paragraph. Ok, here I go...

10,000 years before the 40k "now" the imperium was a great big galactic empire of niceness and somewhat over-zealous expansion. Then Horus (the emperor of humanity's favoured son) decided worshipping chaos gods was a good idea, and about half the space marine legions agreed with him. There was a gigantamongous civil war in which lots of space marines killed each other. The chaos worshippers almost won, but at the last minute horus screwed up and the emp kicked his ass personally. Horus died, the chaos legions all ran away to daemon-lands (the warp), and the emp ended up a withered dead dude on life support for 10k years. This is why regular and chaos space marines dont like each other. In the warp, time is odd, so lots of the original traitor marines are still there, plotting revenge. The 10k years still passed, though, so they've all gone a bit mad and gribbly and mutated from living around so much magic/psychic power/daemons/general oddness whilst nursing 10,000 years of grudge.

OK, done.

The chaos legion that turned to Khorne was the World Eaters. Their pre-heresy colours were white with blue trim. The shoulder icon (and banner icon) was a set of stylised red jaws enclosing a world (sometimes bleeding, sometimes not). They were always a bit berserk, but completely lost the plot when they turned to chaos. Post heresy, they painted all their armour with blood, but retained their iconography. They also use a lot of brass (not gold) and skulls.

much like this, in fact: http://warhammer40k.wikia.com/wiki/World_Eaters

So, as for the mini, my recommendation would be as above, basically. The exact shade of red is open to interpretation, so feel free to darken it down a bit.

You could incorporate one white section with blue trim to show old allegiences. This would show off any drizzled blood stains nicely, I reckon.
As for contrasting colours areas, it's entirely up to you (cloak, etc) . There are no colours that would be un-fluffy.

I notice he's holding a space marine helmet. Khorne has a known rivalry with Slaanesh, so a pink helm would be OK (but would stick out, visually). The World Eaters have a rivalry with pretty much everybody, but Space Wolves would be a good foil, as theyre quite bonkers, too.

The gun he's carrying is a combi-melta. The lower barrel is a bolter (standard sidearm) and the upper, big barrel fires microwaves. Many people paint their melta gun barrels black from the heat, but as I understand it, technically it wouldnt get hot at all (unlike the target, which inevitably explodes.)

Hope that helps. Any other questions, please ask :)

Erm not entirely sure if this is part and parcel of the query but for nurgle conversion greenstuff is your friend...

This is from my WIP... but I hope you get the diseased and pestilent idea...

With Nurgle 3 circles in a triangle is the symbol, but any objects work in that config...
