Pimping the ride and the King

Hi Y\'all, nifty title, hey :D
shooting day is a happy day for me :bouncy::flip:
means I can get a new piece in my showcase, and I get to post and pimp once again on CMON. I am done and through with this beast and quite happy with both the mini and the montage. It\'s also something that I had to do for a while, with all the time I wasted not painting, and now, besides a small unit of converted mounted wight:duh: I am back on schedule lol

Anyway without more babbling here goes:

Very nice, solid 7 from me. The wings/mane/tail add a nice touch of color to a mini that could have ended up all brown and gray. Am I reading correctly that this is for you, and not a commission piece? Those are always satisfying. :D

I think your score is reflecting the fact that the photo doesn\'t have a lot of \"instant impact\". I don\'t think people take more than about 2 seconds to initially judge a mini here, and if something doesn\'t grab their attention in that time, you are getting a 5 or a 6. The brightness on the photo seems to favor the wings, leaving everything else shadowed and somewhat indistinct. It doesn\'t look like it\'s an easy model to photograph either... lots of deep areas that are difficult to light.

Thanks Mike, guess you got a point, it\'s true it\'s hard to photo such a model.
It\'s still commision, but that don\'t mean it was any less satisfying :)
Like I said I am happy with it, but it doesn\'t seem it will go to raise my rankings here.

I would have to echo that the image you have got of the mini seems to be a problem. The model looks unclear and almost dirty due to the contrast of the image, and there are some strange and uncomfortable to the eye halos of odd colour around the edges in places (eg the base areas in pic two) that seem to suggest you could have got the exposure wrong.

I also think that a blue gradient background may do more favours to this than green.

As for the paint job, I can\'t tell if it\'s the photos or your paint, I suspect a mixture of both, but there\'s the fact that he looks rather dirty that could cause people to vote low.

By this I mean that some of the colours look inconsistant on and seem to lack a great amount of punch and clarity. As an example, the knight\'s clothing (which looks murky and unrefined) is inconsistant compared to the horse\'s yellow barding (which is much beter and looks nice and stylish).

I personally think the blues and purples in the wings and hairs are too much. It would have given the yellows and purples of the fabrics more impact if these were in more subdued tones in my opinion. It\'s not so in with the Warhammer fluff either to have those colours on a hippogriff, so you may be losing votes there from people.

It\'s difficult to say what I make of the metallics, because they look pretty flat in these pictures, and again I suspect that your photo quality (well lack of!) is hurting work you have done.

I tend to just not vote for pieces like this at all, because I can\'t do it properly due to the image. I suspect others may vote it low. Get a better picture up and I can give you a rating of my own!

Thanks for the sound explication there lono.
I did expect to have so low votes because of the colors, but I just tought about somewhere in the 6 instead of somewhere in the 5.
In composition, the kings cloth was a bad choice, the wings I like, but it\'s a personnal thing and I agree not to everyone\'s tastes,
Like you said, It\'s both the paintjob and the pic. There are some areas that are less neat, a lot of them due to issues in the montage and resulting frustration towards the end. But nothing to make it worth less than a 6 imo. I don\'t think at my level I could get through something this big and complicated without a few flaws but yeah, righly so people here are a perfectionist bunch. Metallics are better than shown on the pics, I had too much other things too mind to really get the best shots of them.

I guess I just have no clue of what makes a good pic cause I didn\'t see it as this bad.
I often get some points messed up in photoshop by focusing on other things and doing some bad adjustments. Then again I think it\'s too much to photo for my level and equipment, I would doubfully make it better and It\'s leaving tomorrow so I\'ll have to take comfort knowing it\'s fine irl and try to impress you guys with some later project

I think 5.7 is a bit low, and it can probably be connected to an apparent lack of contrast in the wings, which draw the attention due to the bright, unusual colours used. The \'core\' of the miniature is very well done, 7.0 + I\'d say.

I hope the figure gets up over six or you\'ll have been majorly screwed..

Im gunna be totally honest with you GS. The colors are all wrong for Bretonnians. You have five colors and two metals that are the basics for Bret or heraldry in general. Couple that with the pastel colors of the hippogriff and it will set somepeople on edge. Your painting is fine. Your skills are definitely improving for sure.

I like the metals but I think the lion heraldry should have been done gold. Nice work keep it up you will be GD material in no time at this rate.

Hey, cheers guys, sensible voting got it up by .3 :D

Well, I tought I was okay with the heraldry, white on purple, but maybe the colors of the wings fuc*ed it up, oh well.
Metal heraldry is mostly nmm by the way, I was expecting some rambling about it, probably distracted people with the crappy pic :p

Kudos for the different color scheme. I enjoy seeing mini\'s that are a bit out of the norm color wise. I gave you a 7. I have to agree with the mob here about the pic. Some more contrast would really bring out the work you\'ve put in. Pictures are something I need to work on as well. My camera has not learned to cooperate.

well, I do like the colors on the wings but I will have to side with Ogre on this one. The colors would be perfect for something chaos or high/dark elvish. Your skills are improving. Keep up the good work. voted too:beer:

Good to hear you tell me about improving and all, makes me care about the 5.9 a whole lot less.
True the colors would be fitting for chaos, taught about calling it \'King Louen of Slanesh\' myself, but that might have been too much lol
I had it coming to me but meh, I\'m a stubborn bastard.

All things I do have to learn tough, if I wish to make my marks on the comp scene someday, just having a bit of fun in the meantime.
