Pin Vice

How do pinning vices work? Are they electric? Are the usefull on \'normal\' men sized mini\'s?

Pin vices tend to be manually operated. Just like a small hand held drill.

They work for pretty much any size mini, just make sure you get a bit small enough (yet still big enough for whatever you are going to use to pin, usually a paperclip).

I use one and they are great for pinning things together. Basically it a handle with tiny little drill bits and you just place and turn untill you\'re in deep enough.
I use variuos sizes of piano wire to pin things as for a lot of stuff paper clips are just too big and I\'m not great at sculpting so what ever I can do to keep things in thier original form I will.

One word of warning; the drill bit are easy to break. Go slow and back out of the hole often to make sure you don\'t get stuck (sounds like a personal issue )

sewing pins (with the heads cut off) work very well. They don\'t bend easily; very strong.

Don\'t wreck a good pair of clippers trying to cut something too strong. Paperclips usually work fine

I just got me a GW pin vice and its great.

I have a question, any suggestion on what I should use that is thicker than a standard paper clip?
My local hobby store dosent carry plastic rods in different sizes.

Any sort of metal rod is fine so long as you can then cut it

But paperclips can vary in size too, from very thin to quite thick.

Have a look for brass rod or thin aluminium rod usually carried by hobby stores that specialise in Trains or Flying models. Florists wire is also handy for large diameters.

you can find small ones at Hobby L obby in the wood section.They are also great for holding a mini after you put a wire it to paint,it gives you the freedom to turn the mini with a twist of your finger and get to those hard to reach parts without touching the minis fresh paint job.DD

I had an idea: nails! as long as theyre thin enough so I can cut them!

Ill raid our model store in a few days, Ill see if he has brass/aluminium rods.
