Dead easy.
I use neat PVA adhesive (in a 2.5 litre tub, from a hardware store) to glue on playpit sand. No additional grit or kitty litter (fullers earth) on these. Allow to dry, and clean off / sand down the base rim. I used a coarse sanding drum on a dremel on these as I was in a rush - you\'ll notice they\'re not smooth.
Once done, prime black. This seals on the sand. Ensure a solid coat, touch up by brush with a thinned paint if necessary. Allow to dry thoroughly.
For basework and terrain I use artist\'s acrylics. In big tubes or tubs. Cheap, cheerful, and perfectly adequate.
Paint the top raw umber. Solid coverage again.
Mix a little yellow ochre into the raw umber. heavy drybrush.
Mix a little more yellow ochre and some titanium white in. Lighter drybrush. Repeat with more white and lighter drybrushing.
The stripes were painted in VMC pale grey and drybrushed with VMC foundation white.
The grass is then applied by putting on blobs of PVA then pressing a clump of static grass on to it. Tap off the excess, give it a blow and it\'s done. It\'s best not to overdo the grass or be tempted to put it all over the base - this ends up looking wrong.
