pinning experience

Does anyone have experience with cutting off the round bases that usually come with the Reaper Dark Legends mini line, to put them on the Rackham-like bases? I\'m trying to figure out how to pin a finished mini in that style. Also if there are any sites that have good pinning insturctions, please let me know. Thanks.:flip:

Hrm...are you talking about the \"brocolli\" bases on the Reaper minis? I would think the easiest way to get them off is with the conical burs and a Dremel. Cut away as much as you can with those buggers with high speed, probably ending up with some near the feet/cloak/whatever is touching the ground, then carefully working away whatever else you don\'t need.

Not sure if that answers your question. :D

the base is part of the miniature mold, for example, the feet of an elf would be attached to a oval or circular area made of pewter or whatever.

Next question: What is a conical burs and a Dremel?

Dremel - Hand held rotary tool. Like a powered pin vice. You can stick all sorts of drill bits, grinders, wire brushes, polishers etc. in them. A bur is a rotary cutting tool you stick in it.

I usually remove integral bases with a BFO file and a bundle of patience.:D

This is a dremel, on a support base.:

and this is a conical Burr which fits in the business end of the Dremel:

OoOOOOOoo! I want that support base!

The conical bur I use is one of those nasty metal bits. On high speeds it will tear through the metal. Just gotta be careful or the bit can catch and ride all over your mini, though the grinder Dragonsreach pictured would probably have less problems with that. I have a couple of different burs and engraving bits that I picked up from when I started working with resins.

Well they retail at about £40.00 in the UK. (Around $71/$72 USD)
You can get them cheaper but you have to really hunt around.

Yeah...that\'s a little rich for my tastes. Getting one of those vertical mounts and a flex shaft might be easier, though the idea of being able to brace the model/mini with one or both hands and stabilize the Dremel like that is VERY nice.
