Pinning: How far?

Quick question:

What's an acceptable length to drill for good support when pinning?

I'm using a 1.2mm pin on an decent sized white metal mini. 3mm into each piece sound like enough?

should be enough. I drill 3-5mm if possible, but on some pieces (I'm looking at you Shannys' cape...) even 1mm is more than nothing.
But as a rule: as far as you can get without drilling through the piece or going mad (no point in drilling from foot to head even is that were possible)

For added strength use baking soda with the super glue. That said it will dry fast and you will only get one shot at it but it will be a very strong bond. You can put super glue on one piece and baking soda on the other or put the 2 together and dip into the baking soda. Just don't use this on resin minis as there is a bit of heat due to the rapid reaction.

I never knew that Zab, thanks for the tip. I use Gorrilla glue which has a slight flexibility to it making it very strong.

I use gorilla glue sometimes on my bese with some water for expanding fun

I would say it depends on how heavy the item is you are trying to pin. A human arm vs. a dragon wing in 28-32mm metal would determine the size, number of pins and how deep I would drill.

I'm assembling the Nazarova Twins from Corvus Belli (Infinity). The two motorbike pieces rest on the ground and join at the handlebars. I can drill another 1mm without risk, so I might do just that.

Will Green Stuff + CA glue provide as strong of a bond?

If you're just joining the handlebars and it's not weight bearing, then the 1.2mm pin drilled into 2-3mm or so into each handlebar should be sufficient. Just make sure to align the drill bit so you don't accidentally end up drilling through the side of the handlebar. To help keep the bit centered on the handlebar when you start drilling, use the tip of your hobby knife to make a pilot hole for the bit.

Yeah. GS and super glue make a pretty solid bond too.

This

Reaper has a line of elves with the bow separate - the joint is in the wrist. Very small cross section, no room for much of a pin.
Large dragon has 1/8" brass pins 1/4 to 1/2" deep. (3 mm pins at 6-12 mm deep)
