Places for mini painters in So Cal

Hello all,

Just completed my move to Irvine, from CT.

Wondering where all the good paint supply, miniature carrying, and sculpting stuff stores are at!

Btw... for positioning miniatures... what do most ppl consider good as a temporary holding in place agent?

I put some(super glue) on a base or scrap item and then tap my piece on that. Then you can scrape that off if it\'s too much.

Down in OC you\'ve got GW\'s ubiquitous presence, with their store at The Block in Orange and their LA Battle Bunker location in Westminster, but you\'ll also want to look at Brookhurst Hobbies in Garden Grove. It\'s been a while since I\'ve actually been in the store, but they\'ve always been fairly good for miniatures in the past. (And, this response has reminded me I have a small gift certificate for there from Christmas I need to use -- thanks! :) ) Those three are all in the realm of 10-18 miles from Irvine in general, to the north-northwest. The store finder on GW\'s site also lists a Comic Quest in Lake Forest, about 14 miles southeast of Irvine -- they could have other mini stuff, too, if they\'re carrying GW, but I have no idea and no personal experience at all.

Also, another possibility is to see if anything you want is in the eBay store of daloonieshaman -- that\'s run out of the home of a guy I know in Pasadena who runs the Blood Bowl leagues I play in every now and again. If I happen to need something while a league is running (meaning I\'m playing in his garage every couple of weeks), I\'ll often just buy directly from him face-to-face. That could be a possibility for you, too, if you wanted to show up at a gaming night he holds every so often.

As for temporary positioning of minis, I use poster tack, works well enough for me:

I have a great solution for holding minis.
Take a bottle of wine, extract cork, drink contents of bottle. (you won\'t worry about the mini then). :D

Next day fix small amount of plastic card to cork and then glue Mini to plastic card.
Hel Presto.
And it you stiil find things difficult add a section of plastic tube to base of cork to increase grip like so:

thanks for the help all. Dragonsreach, thats exactly what I do, but I was a little vague in my description, and I meant \"temporary positioning\". So I\'ll be trying that blu tac

For temporary positioning - assuming I know what position I want it in, and I\'m just putting it there to paint the surroundings - I pin the foot and drill the hole but just don\'t glue it down.
Actually a lot of the time I never get around to gluing it. I never take the stuff anywhere where the pin would come loose.

Well, I\'m positioning the parts on Warjacks, not a mini a base, so thats why I need something a little strong

Okay then, poster tac, quake hold, any similar substance should do the trick.

Of course, one question to ask is why?
Are you doing this to figure out where to put them? Otherwise there is a good argument for just pinning them.

Well, I\'m going for a specific pose... and I want to make sure that pose works before I drill and pin... or am i just backwards?

No, that\'s fine, better to check your pose first to be certain you\'re happy with it! In most cases, the blue tack/poster tack will be just fine for this; I haven\'t yet run into a situation in which I needed something else.

Thanks for the links, I in fact looked up and found both those stores... do you know if they carry apoxie sculpt, milliput, GS or BS???

Yes, Brookhurst carries all these supplies and then some. They also have many lines of paint, etc. Comic Quest is a lot closer to Irvine (10 min drive), but doesn\'t carry nearly as many lines or supplies as Brookhurst.

Sorry for forgetting this in my original post... Welcome to the neighborhood!!! : )

If you\'re into the painting compition (sp) scene, we have 3 local cons a year in LA (down the street from LAX) by Strategicon as well as GenCon SoCal in Nov.

I\'ve never had anything to do with any painting competitions... but it has been one of my goals. Are theses comps, open to any flavor o mini??? I\'ve grown quite tired of GW recently, and have been eye\'ing Confrontation\\Warmachine mini\'s with deadly intent.

Just found out that the GenCon SoCal has been canceled forever. QQ : ( : (

As for the Strategicons... they have GW and non-GW catagories for Sci-Fi and Fantasy single and squad each. They also have a best Warmachine warband catagory.

This is the list of catagories. I think they need to have at least 3-5 entries for each catagory to have a seperate prize for that catagory. Otherwise it gets lumped into the generic sci-fi/fantasy/other as appropriate.
