Plagurism or flattery?

Granddad!
come across this in the EM thread

http://demonwinner.free.fr/polonia/2008/golden_demon_winner.php?categorie=11#1st

now I\'m not saying the work doesn\'t deserve the the place, and by all means be inspired by the work of others

Jeremies Harlequin

now I know imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but......

you\'d think the organizers would be more in tune with thing,
yeah the work is good, but the idea isn\'t quite original is it, so should it really deserve a first place then?
hmmm, could be a can of worms me thinks...

Wow, a Harlequin that bears a passing resemblance to another Harlequin using the same sculpt. Converted differently, different color scheme. The sleeves are very similar the rest about as different as you can get with Harlies.

On the subject of that Dread, I believe the story is that it was a commission, where the client wanted a near-exact replica of said previous Dread.

Although the idea may not be classed as origonal Mick there is more than a few differences between the two to make them different.

Jericho, Just because they are Harlequins doesn\'t mean to say they have no rights to be in a cometion. Look at the thousands of Marines that are painted every GD but 3 of them still get placed...Do you mean tosay that because X Harlequin in France or Germany or somewhere else for that matter means that, that figure can\'t be painted by somebody else and entered into a GD???
If that is the case what a sad world we are becoming.

Mick you ARE talking about GW are you not.

While I understand the original point that is raised here having looked at the two they are Similar while not Identical.
Therefore to my personal point of view not really a foul, more of a tribute.

And to be honest I think I prefer Ana\'s version of the Harlequin to Jeremie\'s. (and that is not to dismiss Jeremies out of hand, however).

i think that was his point. they are similar but considering the models, it\'s not surprising. and, as you pointed out, if that were the case, there wouldn\'t be another sm entered again!

Yep....I see similarities, but not downright copying...

So, 1257 jerks at the moment... out of 6300 or so... that\'s about 1 of 5? That\'s probably not a bad ratio! lol

I personally see some pretty significant differences between the two and, as has already been pointed out, there are only so many ways to paint a harlequin to make it \'different.\' In fact, on second look, I don\'t find them all that similar at all. The demon winner has a bubble motif on the right leg, a different color scheme, differing armaments and an almost scale mail look on the torso and left leg not to mention the crazy jester hat thing going on. All features Jeremie\'s model differs on.

I agree with Mike, too. For what may be the first time ever I prefer another work to Jeremie\'s of a similar model. I think it\'s a well deserved win.

As far as archetype goes they are the same but to the same degree as, say medieval paintings of crucifixion: characters are the same, composition is the same even colors are very similar, yet there enough differences to be independent works of art.

On the other note you can hardly use \"plagiarism\" when you describe two paintings (miniatures are 3D paintings) - they could be \"copies\" or they could be \"influenced by\". In the end of the day it takes skills and talent to make a good copy of a very complicated painting/sculpture; it takes no skills to copy a paragraph of text and insert it into your own \"work\"

I prefer to think of it as flattery. And like others have said, how much can you really alter a mini? Change the hat? Done. Change up the free-hand? Done. Maybe change the weapons? Ok, not done. But then why do it? Besides, I don\'t think Jeremie would be upset about it. He\'s very much into good painting. Both are very well painted.

They don\'t look that similar to me either; the leap from Harlequin to jester is small enough for those to be similar without the Pedro guy ever even having seen Jérémie\'s in my opinion. Cool pieces :)

as has been said harlequins look pretty similar, for all their supposed endless variety. both are the bomb anyway and i would mind i fi produced a crabon copy of the jbt one, id be ecstatic

both pieces are variations on a theme and excellent works.

certainly over my head.

but why can\'t i be a jerk? i\'m way too far down the list to make the cut, i guess. lol.

No, no, no, I\'m not saying you can\'t do a conversion and paint the same mini as someone else, but how about something a bit more original than said mini leaping off of a similar high point

I\'m just saying it could have been doing something else, no?

Mike: you\'re right, what was I thinking! lol
