Player, then a painter. Now I\'ve got a problem?

Hey all. I\'m new to this board. I\'m very impressed with your collective abilities and knowledge, so I thougth I post a question to the group.

Here\'s the deal. I love to play Warhammer, and I love to paint. But I paint really slow. So, when I got my new Bret army I put everything together so I could play.

Now here\'s the problem...Some of the plastic models are really hard to paint already assembled. Specifically the horses being glued to the stand and some of the lance arms on the knights. A few of these I would like to paint at a higher standard than just slapping a dark color in the shadows and hoping nobody notices.

How do you safely remove an arm or a horse from it\'s base? The glue basically melts the plastic so pulling it apart would be disastrous.

For superglue, there are products called DEBONDERS that work surprisingly well.

It sounds like you used plastic glue though, which does just like you say, it melts the plastic slighly, and it chemically cures back together again. It could very well mean you are stuck (pun INTENDED)lollollol

I\'m afraid if you\'ve used plastic glue you are not going to be able to remove the arms looking the same as they originally were.

I would bite the bullet and try and get a clean break, or re-paint them fully assembled. If you don\'t mind losing 1 try taking the arms off, if it goes wrong dont bother. As for pulling them apart from the horse, if both a plastic you\'ve got now chance.

Sorry to sound negative but, like you said it literally melts the two together.

You could try lightly brushing cellulose thinners to soften the glued area, this may cause some damage to the plastic though I am not too sure about that. When painting an army the standard is not the same as painting display pieces, it is only the stand alone characters that realy need the extra attention.
Also the hard to get to places are the places that are less likely to be seen and would therefore naturally be in shadow so a black primer may help you there. Above all you have learnt a valuable lesson especially with cavalry pieces and that is that nine times out of ten it is better to paint the rider separate from the horse.
I hope you sort it out the Brets are realy nice models and I nearly forgot welcome to the madhouse that are the coolmini forums.

no don\'t..

.. put cellulose thinners anywhere near plastic, unless the effect you are trying t achieve is one akin to the \'blob\'
it will help on any metal mini\'s, just put the mini (metal only) in an old jar, cover with thinners, allow to soak for a while. Cellulose thinners \'jellifies\' the super glue

Mickc - Thanks for the welcome. I don\'t really fancy knights with blob like arms.

Tidoco - Luckily, most of the riders weren\'t glued down I just used the poster tacky stuff. The main thing is the horses themselves. I wanted to do the lord and BSB horses really nice. Oh, and thanks for the welcome.

Talion - I may just sacrifice a Knight Errant for the cause. If he survives, maybe he can earn full knighthood. :0

If you\'re anywhere near Rockville, you could show up at the next DC Area Miniatures Painting Club meeting at Dream Wizards and ask for advice. Of course the next meeting probably isn\'t until September...

You could join the DCAMPC yahoo group:

then ask on the boards.

And you could bring your army around to fight some elves or lizards we\'ve got going and not worry about the look of your men lol

Vince - I\'m in FredNeck. Thanks for the info on the local group. I\'ll check them out. I doubt I\'ll be able to get away from the family to often to lead the noble charge against the lizzie and elves, but I\'ll give it a shot.

Of course I have the opposite probelm. I haven\'t assembled my elves because I want to paint them before I field them.

So we\'d have a game of elves without arms and all grey or primed knights. That would be just too funny on the table!
