I\'ve said it before, and I\'ll say it again. Spurious posting makes the site less interesting, if the site is less interesting fewer people will contribute...and it will eventually die.

Post padding is very antisocial, shows no respect whatsoever for other forum users and will not be tolerated.

This isn\'t aimed at anyone, just a general observation from a frustrated moderator.

And yet what honestly gets done about. For myself, I could care less one way or other. What annoys me is the bitching that goes on between certain groups of people (and I am not talking about your post, rather the people on both sides who cause your post to be necessary).

Lets not forget DrEvil, that sometimes things are done behind the scenes that the entire group isn\'t privy to.

I\'m obviously not innocent at post padding, of course I\'ve done my share. There seems to be a fine line about it. But, its the best we can do, I suppose.

That is fair enough. I was thinking of coming back and deleting my post to be honest. It will always be an issue when you have a group as large as this. What annoys me doesn\'t bother someone else, what bothers them has no affect on me.
Hard to get that balance right one way or other.

Fair enough, vike, but when the spamming continues unabated, us peons on the ground floor tend to believe that nothing is done about it. I mean, there\'s finn saying that it\'s antisocial, and will not be tolerated, but the spam continues. I don\'t want to question the moderators, I\'m well aware that your decisions aren\'t always visible to the plebes. I\'ve done my moderating stint for a large and very active forum, it\'s a lot of work that can require hard decisions.

finn is absolutely right though; spamming does make the forum less interesting. If the last post in a topic is by one of the frequent spammers, I tend not to open it. And that makes up for too many topics that get ignored because I can\'t be bothered to read spam.

It\'s a fine line...

The last thing these forums need is mods going around deleting posts and blocking ISPs in order to control spam. Generally it isn\'t a major problem and appears to be a \'phase\' some people go through...???
I have tackled what I believed to be spamming head-on in the past and been heavily criticised for interfering or \'picking on\' people.
As with most other issues, I regard these forums to be largely self-regulating and, if the comments of the masses don\'t work then the mods will have to step in. However, a certain amount of spamming is the price one pays for a reasonably democratic forum.
As DrEvilMonki says, it\'s hard to get the balance right, but compared to other forums, I don\'t believe CMON is too bad....after all, try talking about religion or politics on other mini forums and see what happens:D

I agree, but also how many other forums could you have such a well-reasoned discussion of said topics without it devolving into name calling and bashing? I\'m enjoying our religious debate ;)

thats why I\'m drawn back here time and time again. The \"dodging the bullet\" thread was superb, tensions ran high, the it just went perfectly silly! It doesn\'t happen elsewhere....at least in this genre of hobby forums. :moon:

It sometimes seems to be that the desire to hit freakdom pushes everything out of the window. Some folks can get there quick and be totally entertaining and add value to their posts, some simply don\'t.
And quite frankly, it\'s not very exciting when you get there...............lol

Well said, Mr. Finn. Another forum I visit is very strict about no spamming: on-topic posts only and the topics have to pertain to the forum. Very good for getting rules updates, but very poor for personal interaction and community building. I would hate to CMON become something like that.
