Hi guys I am an oldish player but a youngish painter, that is to say I have played 40k and other games for longer than I would like to admitt BUT I have not been painting that long, I took a break for quite a few years and I am only now starting to try again.

I am at a loss sometimes when I read reviews on here and the people start to talk in terms such as \"dipping\" I know I am a numpty but could someone please explain these terms to me.
:(

Dipping is a speed painting process where the painted but not washed mini is dipped in water based stain, and then slung to remove excess stain -

as explained here -

it\'s easier to paint the stain on (less messy and just as quick with the added bonus of using less \"dip\")

it\'s basicly wood stain, painted over a basecoated colours.

Do you need any other terms clarified?

Someone should write a glossary lol

Here\'s some off the top of my head:

NMM - Non Metallic Method - the technique of painting a surface to appear metallic using non-metallic paints

SENMM - Sky/Earth NMM - a technique which attempts to replicate the extreme shine and reflectivity of chrome by having an aritificial \"horizon line\" - may also be used separately from NMM

OSL - Object Sourced Lighting - painting highlights and shadows to replicate an actual light source, rather than relying on simple edge highlights. OSL can be in different colours or plain \"white light\"

Zenithal lighting - Painting the highlights and shadows as though the light source is at a specific point (AS I understand it)

I think \"zenithal\" refers to a lightsource above the mini (like the sun, a street light etc). The zenith is the point directly above an object. Thus zenithal lighting refers to a mini painted as if it was lit from above.

Other minis have been painted as if lit by a specific object that is not zenithal, for example a camp fire, cannon muzzle flash. Not sure what the technical term for this would be, but it is different to OSL.

I don\'t know what a pockle or a numpty is but wherever you are from, you have great slang there.

I\'m surprised there isn\'t an \"Idiot-proof Dipping Guaranteed Results\" article on this site. Some people are very anti-dip but a lot of others use the method.

Roger Rabbit is very anti-dip, but for the life of me I can\'t figure out why anyone else would be.

It seems to be a fast, effective way to field a completely painted army.

I did try it once on one fig, and it failed miserably....but I\'ll try it again!

I thought someone had done a CMON glossary, with links to articles etc.

Maybe my memory is failing me or clouded by the Counterberry Wine I\'m going to drink tonight.
