...at my figures!

I have been painting and lurking on here for a wee while now but now I FINALLY have a proper digital camera, my first four submissions have just gone up.

I would greatly appreciate votes, input, and comments on my work.

They are submission numbers 57110, 57111, 57112, and 57113.

I\'m glad to finally be able to participate fully in this site, as it has been a huge help and inspiration to me in the past!

thank you in advance for your input!

Cheers, Isis

It helps if you tell us where to look (we are lazy and would rather be painting.lol)

bounty hunter:

damsel:

tomb queen:

paladin:

Your NMM is pretty good, maybe take the highlights up one more notch?

Your non-standard flesh is interesting in the damsel.

The only obviuos fault that I can find is the tomb queens hand/staff needs to be cleaned up (that or she has been holding that staff a LONG time).

The paladin looks good in dark skin but the dark armor makes the fig too dark overall, maybe some NMM gold instead of bronze?

I agree..

I agree with almost everything Airhead said (especially the lazy part!)

I like the Damsel the best.

Also, your colors a very rich and deep looking.

I think the bases are a little lackluster, but thats just a minor quibble...

Overall, nice. A little glossy for some on this site, and the bases are a little plain, but for figures for use they are in the 6-7 range in my opinion.

A solid 7 member

I think that descrbes perfectly what i think. nice work on those maybe the NMM Gold is too Yellow, less shades of yellow and more of a mix of it with white would help me thinks ;)

Thanks very much for your input so far! I feel quite honored as I expected my scores to be lower than this, given the quality of some of the figure\'s they are up against.

The glossiness is a bit of a problem with the camera or lighting I suppose. I put it down to only using one lamp to take my pictures (which will change with the next paycheque I suppose).
Does anyone else have any ideas on what causes glossiness?

Cheers, Isis

I like those minis..

The bounty hunter has got some nice shading and blacklining, and your NMM is okay but at it\'s best on the paladin, tip for the future.. when you do NMM the next time, do it like the paladin but go up to pure white highlights.. and try to make it look less yellowy.

Voted 7 for all except the Tomb Queen, something that nags me with that paintjob, not quite sure

Ink washes, varnish, lights, glossy paints.

Well, I gave them all 7\'s, except for the tomb queen, which I thought was your best one. With a bit more definition on the mummy wrappings and miscellaneous bits, it\'d be even better. :)

I put it down to lighting then, as I don\'t use inks (I always seem to get a really untidy look when I use them), I don\'t varnish since a wee accident in which all the lovely colours on the mini got horribly distorted by the varnish, and i certainly don\'t use glossy paints (mostly Vallejo, some GW)...
I have a feeling that I put the light too close to the figure when I take my photos... I\'ll have a play around with it some time and see what happens...

Cool !! Thaks for the link, I\'ve been having glossyness problems too, also from my lighting I guess I must be putting it too close.

Isis, I agree with Supervike, that is I feel the damsel is your best work. I little bit of Testor\'s Dullcoat spray as well as some brighter highlighting would improve your models, but all in all you have some pretty impressive pieces posted here. Keep up the fine work!

Calavera, thank you for the link! Very helpful indeed!

I procured some paper from work today and tried it out with the Bounty Hunter (on which the cursed shinyness is at its worst)... it works quite well, the result is much smoother - check out the results at
http://www.coolminiornot.com/57403 Now, back to painting. Cheers, Isis

Isis, I think that baking paper method works well as a diffuser filter on your lights and I can\'t wait to try it out, but I still believe that Testor\'s Dullcoat will help too since the hair and the green material still seems to have an unwanted shine to it. Testor\'s Dullcoat in brush on form is now available through the CMON online store.

I think you should go for higher contrast for your NMM - like start your color sequence with a much darker color. I used to start with a medium brown, but am currently adding black to the basecoat, having found that NMM is all about contrast.

Arnise should have been in a new thread. I like her skin tones and the green stone. The NMM looks like it needs to go whiter. Touch of white or bright yellow on the tops of the rivits (not the whole rivet, just the top) as well as each armor plate. Her hair needs a little more color separation between the dark & the bright as well - a small hot spot of white or kahki maybe.
