POLL - Style of Comments

Well, I\'ve only been here a couple of weeks, so I\'m a real newcomer. I\'ve only just started posting comments, and try to say the kind of thing that I\'d like to read about my own figures. That is to say, constructive comments (occasionaly a jokey one, but that\'s rare) that are meant to be helpful.

If all I could think to say was \'That\'s awful with no redeeming features at all!\' I wouldn\'t say it.. just go onto the next one.

What I find difficult, but try to do is not let the sculpt affect my comments. A really badly produced model could be very well painted, but I\'ll try and restrict comments to the painting and basing, not the model itself - unless it\'s been converted.

Finally, there are times when \'wow!\' is to my mind the only possible comment, but those are fairly few.

For laughs I\'m thinking about posting my old minis. Namely the ones from my early days. I\'m just curious what kinds of reactions I\'ll get and if anyone will comment on something that really does look bad.

And Zap, I have a better candidate for your crappy mini page. I think you\'ll laugh when you see it....

On the opposite side of the coin, I\'ve seen about 99% of what\'s on here and I say you\'re probably not missing much Sounds kinda mean, but it\'s honestly been a while since I\'ve seen a real jaw-dropping mini. The cyril\'s, Verzani\'s and the johnnyKS\'s haven\'t been too busy lately.

But then again, there have been more and more people approaching their level, so that\'s pretty encouraging. And that leads me to my motivation behind posting comments...

I usually try to comment if the painter is ready to \"take it to the next level\" or however you want to put it. I think it\'s a lot more constructive to say \"You have a lot of skill in X area, if you try Y here you\'ll have a great mini on your hands\" than the usual \"Wow that\'s great\" or \"Try hilighting next time\" style comments we see a lot.

Yeah, some times you need to be told you kick ass or told you suck, but usually it\'s quality over quantity for me.

Color theory is another thing I try to comment on too. If someone has a lot of skill but the color scheme is kinda iffy, I might make a suggestion as to what might contrast better and enhance the \"mood\" of the models.

Kannan- if you do, be prepared for the low scores, but over time you\'ll be surprised. A few people will say nasty things about them and tell you your work should be barred from the site, but others will enjoy the nostalgia. I speak from experience.

Actually, I think the comments saying your stuff shouldn\'t be allowed because it\'s so bad are the most hurtful, but they aren\'t usually direct. They come in forums where folks say things like \"anything below a 5 should be knocked off the site after x votes.\"

Goat blowing..

I really want to be able to get to sleep tonight, so I need someone to help me out here. If someone commented that my miniature, \"really blows goats\", should I a) thank them profusely or, b) reach for my Hackmaster 5000?
Seriously, (although that was a serious question) I can\'t help responding to minis that really appeal to me with praise. As some images form on my screen, I just think \'wow\'! It would be unfair of me not to reflect that back to the artist. I also agree with an earlier post, in that the only comments that really annoy me are the ones which criticise creativity because they have deviated from the \'Great Design\'. I saw a classic example tonight: Someone had slagged off a skaven/space marine conversion \'cos it had damaged the integrity of the separate races or other such bilge.

i\'d have to be nice

consideration for others aspiring to become better painters require us to tell them they are doing good. i do this if the attempt is real and original; if its someone simply trying to be superior and turn this site into a sport, i try to shoot them down, and tell them \'hey you/your model blow(s) goat(s)\'.

so each must be used accordingly.

i usually tend to say what i like or not and if there is something to do to make the mini better.
i never \"blame\" someone if the mini looks bad: i always have my first painted mini under my eyeslol

Good Responses

The better responses are the ones which offer ways to improve. Even though most people seal their minis before posting, I know of a few who post, touch up, and then post agein and see if they get a higher score. The whole purpose of commenting on a mini isn\'t for the whole world to think \"thats a crappy model\" or \"thats the coolest model ever,\" its so that the artist can learn how to improve.

Personally, when I look at a piece and comment on it I try to give at least something good before giving something bad.

I also believe that if you\'re going to give a score lower than what the current average is that you should give a comment as to why.

For good minis if I really like it I\'ll say so, and if I think there are areas that could be improved I\'ll say that as well.

I usually only post what I consider constructive comments when they are solicited. If some one wants my opinion he or she will ask for it, in my opinion.

I never tell a person they have painted a model the wrong color, or with the wrong design, unless they say, \"I was going for such and such a look.\" Otherwise I assume the artist knows what color he intended to paint it.

I never say any painting blows goats. I don\'t even think you can do that. Not even here in Georgia.:innocent:

I do tell a person their model kicks ass. Especially if I did the same model and I know exactly how hard it was to paint his armpit hair.

I also have a bad habbit of posting comments that I think are funny, but don\'t really comment on the artistry. I try to never be rude, but if I piss you off, please tell me and I will promptly apologize.

sorry for the second post

When I did my first post I had only read the first 5 posts or so. Cardinal sin of posting, I know, but I was anxious to post.

Anyway, I went back and read some of the posts and I have to say that some things bother me.

If someone sees your post and comments with something inane like, \"WAAAAGH!\" don\'t be offended. It doesn\'t hurt you in any way. It\'s just someone having fun. Don\'t stomp on somebody\'s good time. And don\'t be one of those superior kids from High School who pretended they were so above jockularity.

Mindless comments like that should really be interpreted as praise. They wanted to say something, but what they wanted to say was either already said, or they couldn\'t put it into words. Just assume you inspired in the a primal yell.

And the same thing goes for the humor. If you don\'t think it\'s funny then don\'t laugh. If you think it\'s rude then say so. But if you think it\'s rude simply because it doesn\'t comment on the mini well that\'s just sad. There\'s more to creativity than color choice.

I am one of the evil \"humor posters.\" If I see a mini and it brings a funny thought to mind, I\'ll post it. I usually try to add a comment directly about the mini, but I don\'t always and I won\'t always. Sorry.

Hey barkel,
I love to read what folks say about my minis, especially if it makes me laugh. As the painter I want to know what reaction people get, and if the reaction is that it reminds them of a joke, great. They\'ve enjoyed my work on some level and I\'m happy.
Of course, much of what I paint is a joke on some level.
