Pollo Loco sculpt

Alright, its not really a chicken, but that\'s what my family was calling it. This little bugger (54mm tall) was done in Fimo classic, with the wings and tail sculpted separately for casting. This was one sculpt that I was finally happy with and I though it had a nice flow to the body and head.

The concept art is here. some things do not translate well, like the really long head feathers, since casting tends to make them brittle. They just ended up a lot thicker, but at least they will not break when cast.

now if someone would hire me to paint one, i\'d be stoked...
as it is i have all your ladies just layin\' around naked, waitin\' for some colourlol...
unfortunately all my commissions seem to be for GW and PP minis, no small companies gettin\' the love:evil:...

Hey, thanks guys! Jah, you\'re the only one so far (the figure has been out for a month already) who has mentioned the Mexican flag. That was a bit of the idea behind the base actually, as many of the figures I am making now have some sort of Mesoamerican theme.

If you really want to paint something, send me a PM. I really have too much to do and not enough time. Usually I paint everything for Dragonblood myself, but I can\'t when doing the sculpting too (along with shipping, web design, accounting, etc).

that\'s why i fell for your feathered priestess with flaming phoenix the first time i saw her...
it reminded me of the old velvet aztec painting i used to drool over as a kid, down at la panita (unfortunately long since out of business, probablt thanks to the health departmentlol)...
i still love to see those paintings in the mercado, in tijuana...

cheers

Ha, I once got a velvet painting of a tiger in Tijuana. There were hundreds of them among all the velvet elvises.

I liked it though, and it was cool to look at how some simple brushstokes on black got such a good contrast. It must have taken about 10 minutes to do.

I finished up the painted version after finding a bit of free time. I think my painting style has really gone full circle over the last few years, from glazes and washes, to blendy, and back to washes and glazes. I used to paint watercolors and silks with inks when I was young and I think I\'m just gravitating back to that.

This one was done almost entirely with golden fluid acrylics, paints with color and consistency more like old GW inks than paint. They are thicker, of course, but are still very liquid. Great for glazing, but terrible for handling strength. Still, mixing them with a touch of matte medium makes up for that. After doing all the glazes, I just go over highlights with opaque paints. One trick for feathers is to do washes of dark color to get the texture, then go over them again with opaque colors to bring back the overall shape and reduce the contrast. The contrast shows through the thin opaque glaze but it looks like everything has been blended.

Anyways, here is the main shot
