PØ's wip log, to force me to finish stuff, and well, help

Hola, I've been a very long time lurker here. I posted some pictures 10-15 years ago sometime on this page on a different account, and figured I'd finally post some more.

I started out in this hobby some 20 years ago (at the age of 10-12 or so), but I've had very long breaks (many years). I just started up again with painting approximately a year ago now after a break of I don't know how long. I think maybe as long as 10 years.

But I've been back at it now, and the landscape has changed tremendously. I've been devouring video tutorials and articles from various painters of a quantity of several a day, and experimenting and learning. My skill and style changes with every project I do, as I draw inspiration from the techniques and styles of other painters.

With this project log I hope to gain further motivation to keep on painting and improve. I'm grateful for any criticism or pointers I may get, and I hope to be able to ask the community here for help with the direction some of my projects should go.

My current project is the ogroid thaumaturge from the silver tower box set. I didn't really like the colour scheme for him the 'eavy metal team chose for him. While their paintjob of course is excellent I wanted to try for something more gritty and evil looking.

The colours used for the different areas, over a black undercoat:

Flesh tones:

Basecoat tanned flesh (old gw colour)
Heavy nuln oil wash
Rapply tanned
Highlight with tallarn flesh (old gw foundation paint)
I mixed in some white to the tallarn flesh in some areas as well and highlighted further
Glaze purple ink to create some colour variation (vallejo game colour)
Glaze dark sea blue into the deep recesses (vallejo model colour)

Black areas:

Black, I think i've used both abaddon black and black from vallejo model colour here. I used more and more model colour black throughout the project
Highlight with thinned mix of model colour black and dark sea blue, then pure dark sea blue, then dark sea blue and white mixed in, then I glazed the recesses with thinned black again and the rest with thinned dark sea blue

Runes:

I painted them all white first since the colour I want as the basecoat is lugganath orange (gw edge paint), which has quite weak pigment, then well... lugganath orange
After that I did a wash with bloodletter, which I also glazed on the sides of the runes to give some glowy appearance.
The glow wasn't strong enough, so I glazed on some blood red (old gw paint) as well on the edges of the runes
Finally I rehighlighted in the middle of some of the runes with lugganath orange.

Truth be told I was quite clumsy here and managed to get overspill of lugganath orange on some areas again and again, and had to touch up over and over with both the surrounding colours and reapply red...

His eyes were painted the same way as the runes. I think I'll use the same colours for the flames on his staff as well, but I might have to modify them to look darker... not sure.

The hornes and hooves:

Basecoat adeptus battlegrey (gw old foundation paint, dark / mid grey)
Wash nuln oil
Mix of model colour black and game colour white in various mixes from dark to light to highlight them, then a glaze of a dark version of this mix over in the end. Also I glazed washed some black into some areas in the edges to create some sort of outline.

The bronze:

Balthazar gold basecoat
Nuln oil wash
Reapply balthazar gold as first highlight
Vallejo game colour bronze highlight in a couple of thinned layers
Bronze mixed with game air silver as final highlights.
Nihilakh oxide to create some oxidation effect. I was unsure whether or not to do this as I was quite happy with how it looked already. But yolo >.<

The cloth:

Rakarth flesh basecoat
Seraphim sepia wash, then I started layering on thinned game colour white as the wash was still wet for the highlights.
I added blood spatters with blood for the blood god on the bottom of it.
I realized it was way too bright compared to the rest of the miniature, so I ended up darkening it with glazes of agrax earthshade, nuln oil and dark sea blue mixed with glaze medium. Actually I think glaze medium is used in nearly every glaze I do. I think the colour I ended up with looks reasonable next to the rest of it. The goal was to paint something that could at some point have been white, but was dirtied down.

The paintjob isn't the smoothest I've done, but thus far I'm fairly happy with it and the colour choices I've made.

I'm considering what colours will work for the handle of his staff, maybe something close to the cloth?

Welcome to the forum! Your model is looking great already, so not much advice or help I can give, but I'll definitely follow along with your progress. I especially like the face, it looks sufficiently demonic.

Thanks a lot :)

I've painted the base now, and nearly finished with the arm. I think only the flame and wood handle of his staff is is left. I'll get some more pics up tomorrow!

After this is done I think I'll try to finish up the priest from the set. He's nearly done, but with the original colour scheme.

Finished the thaumaturge, and started painting the orruk megaboss on foot. I'm going for a colour scheme with black metal armour and skin tones with relatively low saturation.

I'm trying to paint the armour as if it was NMM, but with metallics. When I do NMM it seems to look too cartoony for my tastes. This is probably simply due to lack of skill, but yea...

Anyway, the finished thaumaturge:
As mentioned above, not my smoothest paintjob (nor did I attempt to make it super smooth), but I'm happy with the colour choices and the overall feel I achieved with the model.

The photos are in the first post now

I'll get some pics of the megaboss up soon as well.

If the pics are too large btw just tell me. I just take them with my iphone. The only editing I did on these now was to crop them a bit. At least with this size you see all the flaws in my painting! :p

Some pics of the body of the orruk.

I don't think the black metal photographs very well. I like how it looks irl, but I think it looks utter crap on these photos. Maybe once it's done, if I take proper photos (with lightbox etc) it'll look better. Not sure.
The colours used for it are vallejo model colour black, game air chainmail, game air silver, and some model colour tank brown.

I'll weather it some more with rust I think, which basically will be applying some sort of orange or lighter brown around the rivets, notches and in some recesses. I think troll slayer orange and bestial / balor brown works for this.

The skin is castellan green -> straken green -> loren forest (I think that's the colours in order from dark to light), and rotting flesh on top. I think nurgling green is similar to it in the new range. Then I've shaded it a bit with a very thinned down tank brown.

The red is currently just basecoated khorne red. I'm not entirely sure how I want to paint it, but I reckon shade with khorne red + black or brown, and maybe some dark sea blue. And highlight simply by mixing in ivory or white to the red.

The face and the red parts are done. I'm not sure what to do with the skull yet. I see many who have painted this mini add some tone gradients so that it's darker on the tips etc, I might do that. I'm also considering making it look very aged and chipped, or bleached... Not sure, I think chipped and aged might work with the rest of the scheme?

Also I'm not sure if I should add some freehand to his armor, and if so where? On the black parts?, maybe some white flames going up on his foot?

And should I add weathering to the red parts? Like chips in the paint?
The black parts aren't supposed to look "painted", more like just beaten metal. So I intend to add some more rust around the bolts and such there.

Looks great! I would say at least one on the gauntlet holding the axe. I can see how it would be tough finding spots. If you do to many in the same area or just in general it could distract from the model and make it look cluttered.
