After having looked at lots of examples of rusting things and dirt etc on things, old buildings whatever, I have come to one conclusion, trying to mimic real life weathering on minis often looks \'wrong\' on the mini.

Not sure why, probably a scale thing, but there is a big difference between what looks good on a mini and what is realistic.

For me a lot of the time there is a tendency to go way OTT with weathering. Looking at real life stuff the amount of rust in particular seen on minis is the same as something in the scrap yard totally unusable.
Another thing is when people do a brown muddy weathering effect and base the mini on a grey ash type base.

Forgive the threadomancy, but I\'m looking for rust examples too, and I thought I\'d post my inspirational weathering pics.
The first 2 are real, the last is actually a watercolor, but it\'s good to get an idea of how other artists represent rust.

I think it\'s OK to make minis look worn and used, but weathering is easily overdone on some thing that small. Have a look in greenones WIP thread, some of the latest pics are of a horse\'s barding - got some pretty good thing going there.

Who, me ???
Sure was not expected to be mentionned here... lol Well, thanks

I think weathering is alike to gore, can look really good, but too much can ruin a piece. It\'s popular lately so you can see all kind of extreme examples flying around.
Good extreme weathering must be done subtly and be well taught of. YellowOne dreadnoughs are my favorite examples, but this must be verrrrrryyyyyy looooong toooo dooooo...

@Tinweasel: Good example, I can feel the thetanos within :D

I seem to remember posting some random weathering-style pics a while ago when I got my new camera... I\'ll see if I can find and link the thread...
