Preference ; Style vs. Realism...

Lo\' Though it hath been long more a fortnight since mine words hath splayed across the screen of these forum. I do extend once more the hand of charity that the collective voice here dwelling might offer enlightenment...

Yay, I pose the question to thee, dost thine love lie with the pristine reflection of the real world in the figurines minutae for which being painted thou art smitten?

Or dost thine heart slave with abandon for those Mini figures whose visage art exaggerated and dynamically \" toony \"?

In other words do you like figures that are more uber realistic like the work of say Gael Goumon, Jason Weibe, or Ben Seins......

Or do you prefer the more cartoony exaggerated stylization of the work of say Kevin White ( Celtos, Hasslefree ) or Werner Klocke ( duh )or Steven Buddle or Andy Foster ( Heresy )..

I appreciate any input offered, and shall smiteth with a room temperature Keilbasa sausage those who do not offer their input.

Thank You. :D

I like both, but if I have to chose I\'d go for style! :D

When it comes to painting, though, I prefer realism. Realistic painting on stylishly designed minis!

That\'s a tough question.
I chose realistic, but they\'re harder to paint, IMO. I just love the LOTR line by GW.
However, I have a lot of fun painting GW dwarves, so in the end it depends if I want something good looking for display, or if I just want to have some fun.

Sorry, I fell asleep whilst reading your mediaeval ramblings!

I don\'t think I mind which, as long as it\'s the dog\'s knackers.

Surely you mean not the dog\'s knackers? I struggle to see Fido being up to such abuse. lol

To me, the most inspiring minis are those that are biased towards style. A fianna is a very inspiring sculpt, but yet another Aragorn in his 50th pose is not. Chris Fitzpatrick inspires me, Rackham inspires me, and I\'m far more keen to paint those than the Reaper miniatures that are sitting uncleansed and without underwear.

I think my Ecclesistical friend is saying, don\'t care as long as it don\'t suck! (sorry for paraphrasing you Rev!).

I\'m inclined to agree, I like historical miniatures as much as fantasy/sci-fi.

As long as they are not Poo! (for suth, me lud!)

Yup, I find myself agreeing with the masses....I like both styles, each has its own merits, and each look great when done well.

That being said, I do strive for realism when I am painting....

Same...

I really like both styles. If I was honest and took an inventory of my collection, painted and as yet to be painted it would probably weigh more on the realistic side, though the dragons would tip the scales the other way.... lol

Cheers,
Grumb

I\'ll jump on the bandwagon as well here and \'agree with the masses\' (great, we\'re all turning into small minded, easily lead individuals .. I knew it).

I usually pick out something that catches my eye and the more dynamic the pose or the interesting weapons/armor/shields usually get my attention. Right now I\'m interested in Reaper, Rackham and Asmodee lines.

Well, I was tempted to NOT voice my opinion in hopes of being \"smiteth with a room temperature Keilbasa sausage\" but that\'s somehing for another thread, perhaps one in \"Painting & Perversions\" ;):innocent:;)

However, I took a quick inventory of my minis and it seems that I\'ve voted with my pocket... both ways. :( I seem to have nearly an equal number of \"Stylistic\" and \"Realistic\" ones. THis seems to put me firmly in with the majority here.

[Edit] OOPS! Just looked at teh poll results. Guess I was wrong. The poll shows more people leaning towards \"Stlisitc\" Guess I was judging by the actual comments, which seemed to be mostly stuck in the middle.

- soundly smites dauber22 with a room temperature Keilbasa..... twice -

^^ That was for provoking me. ;)

Well I can see that many people have decided to vote for the nebulous void... AH what lovely miniatures there have never been to not exist not within the nebulous void. Actually I had made a mistake in making the poll and had not intedned there to be a third alternative... Oh well.

Many thanks for all the input and such. It seems to me that the large concensus is that stylistic minis are more likely to be successful than realistic, which is nice. I have been slaving away at producing my own minis for the past year or so. I have yet to publish anything but I feel that I will soon. This poll was kind of a way to feel out the market to see whether or not I was wasting my time working on minis of a more stylized bent.

I would love to get more feedback on the question though so by all means..........
