Preffered Basecoat for Gold

Hullo there, Cesar here.
I\'ve just recently miss placed my Shining gold, In the meanwhile, I thought I would start this pole.

I\'m curious, when painting gold what base color do you prefer to work on?
Listed in GW paint, I am sure you understand the gist, and can compare with your similar paints.

To add a spittle of controversy, i\'ll explain what brought me here: I was fixing up a few of GW\'s Iron Breakers i had worked on, long ago. In celebration of the new Dwarf army release, im re-doing much of my army, adding touches, and giving them painted, and terrain bases!

So, I surf over to the recent i]Preparing for the Underway: Part I. Painting Ironbreakers Quickly[/i] article, in the Dwarfs section of the GW site.
I\'m surpised read the suggestion that I paint over the detail previously drybrushed Mithril Silve (or boltgun metal) with a coat of black, or tin bitz.
Sinse the Painting Workshop; High Elf Warriors in the LOTR section suggest painting over the black undercoat with a mithril silver, claiming a black undercoat will produce a dulled gold, I\'m left off gaurd, and a little confused. ???

Undercaot chaos black then basecoat scorched brown then layer the metals.

EDIT
Sorry my explanation is that most of the metals dont have good coverage (ie you can see the undercoat through them). Scorched brown will give you a more natural base to the gold as opposed to black which will look too \"black\" and actually shows through green sometimes.
I would use black for silvers though but boltgun metal has a good coverage anyway.

I like going with a red or orange myself.

Traditionally, gilding has been done over a red or green undercoat. Gold leaf, being so thin, allows the undercoat, while not actually seen, to imbue the finished gilding a nuance.

Red creates a warm tone, green a cool tone.

Gilding is never done over a black undercoat, it ends up looking green.

i tend to use tin bitz if i want it to look less shiny or silver if i want it to look shiny. although i am now gonna give red green and snakebite a try....

It\'s an interesting poll here, a good amount of answers, new options and opinions. I had\'nt thought of using scorched brown, or a green. I\'ll have to try out other options mentioned.

I only wish I knew how to add more options to the poll.
I read the forum F.A.Q. No luck. ???

Traditionally...

Yeah, that\'s where I got the idea from. No idea what effect it has compared to other undercoats because I\'ve never tried anything else. I dont like metallic paints much so dont use them too often.

I mix all my colours so \"brown\" wouldn\'t help :D

Plus I don\'t always use the same base colours anyway - I might just go straight in over the grey primer.

I use brown as a basecoat for gold.

I always use black as a basecoat for silver but lots of people seem to use blue?

I used pink and red under gold once to create a rosey-gold effect.

i voted for tin bits, but in reality i use a number of different basecoats, depending on the end result im going for. each basecoat will contribute something to the final look of the metal. what are you going for, a rich yellow gold? a pale, soft gold? warm? cool? old? new? the more i work with metallics the more i find that painting them is a subtle art indeed, at least as complex as NMM.

I like a variety as well. I was just asking peoples preference. I prefer to use tin bitz, it\'s my favorite base to work on. I also like highlighting a heavier gold, with a lighter tone.
For these Iron Breakers I finished, I enjoyed shining gold, on a tin bitz base, a wash of flesh wash, and finish with a shining gold. I\'m going for a rich, red, heavy feel for these dwarves, defending their rich mountian homes. But on my limited pallet vampire, i started with a snakebite leather base, then applied shining gold.
A silver base, under gold has just never worked well for me. Personally im chatting about table top qaulity minis, that im doing in this post. The thread is for general chat on the subject of gold and possible/prefered bases, and the outcomes. \':)\'

@Cherry Bomb I\'m interested in trying the rose gold efftect. Earlier this day I was just wondering about how to get a nice redish taint on a metal.. especially on a silver, or steel. Rose gold is very attractive. :) I wonder how nice the rose gold turned out? Was the rose gold obviously rose gold? Do you figure the same method will work under a silver?

Does anyone know how i can edit this poll? I wish to add more options.
