Preparing for Emergencies

Trevor

Brushlicker and Freak!
This reminds me, when we were at primary school being told that in event of a nuclear attack we were within the 40 mile destruction zone around London, so were basically toast.

I don\'t remember being particularly bothered though, more like wow! thats a big area for total destruction.

Yep it seems like all governments have the same idea about protection in the event of any type of attack:

\"Screw the populace and Save the poloticians\"

Something\'s wrong with this picture ???

Unfortunately I remember the \"Duck & Cover\" 1960\'s advice as well.
I was once talking to a Fireman after an earthquake in the UK, and he said the advice about staying in a doorway had only one good factor about it. It made the bodies easier to find!

To be honest, in the event of Nuclear war, I think I would rather be in the blast radius than survive.
However if I did survive I\'d be pretty well set, 2 shotguns (12 Gauge and 20 Gauge), a 30.06 rifle, a .22 rifle, a.22 pistol, a 9mm pistol, and a 40 cal. pistol. Not to mention a field of cattle.
The first place I would be heading is to loot the local ammo store or our local National Guard Armory, second place the drug stores, third I\'d stockpile all the gasoline I could find.

What would be really intresting though is the role reversal in society. Those people with some of the lower paying jobs like carpenters, repairmen, farmers, would be virtually indespensible as would anyone with hunting skills. However, people like astrologers, insurance salesmen, people without any true survival skills would be practically useless and probably die out unless they could adapt.

Man, Dave, that\'s some arsenal you\'ve got there! I\'m shifting to DC in a few month\'s time, and everytime I bring up the subject of having guns in the house, my fiancee flips ...

At least now I can quote the \"need for defense in the aftermath of a nuclear war\" statement at her :).

This thread reminded me of an e-mail I recieved about a year ago.

The US government has a new website, http://www.ready.gov. It\'s another attempt at scare mongering in the style of the old \"duck and cover\" advice after WWII.

The fun thing is that these pictures are so ambiguous they could mean anything! Here are a few interpretations.

expl_vis_dont_run.gif

If you have set yourself on fire, do not run

expl_vis_shout.gif

If you spot terrorism, blow your anti-terrorism whistle. If you are Vin Diesel, yell really loud.

expl_vis_open_door.gif

If you spot a terrorist arrow, pin it against the wall with your shoulder

bio_vis_substance.gif

If you are sprayed with an unknown substance, stand and think about it instead of seeing a doctor.

expl_vis_flashlight.gif

Use your flashlight to lift the walls right off of you!

vis_chem_wash.gif

The proper way to eliminate smallpox is to wash with soap, water and at least one(1) armless hand.

expl_vis_cover_nose.gif

Michael Jackson is a terrorist. If you spot this smooth criminal with dead, dead eyes, run the fuck away.

vis_chem_area.gif

Hurricanes, animal corpses and the biohazard symbol have a lot in common. Think about it.

vis_chem_affected.gif

Be on the lookout for terrorists with pinkeye and leprosy. Also, they tend to rub their hands together manically.

expl_vis_closed_door.gif

If a door is closed, karate chop it open.

expl_vis_table.gif

If your building collapses, give yourself a blowjob while waiting to be rescued.

vis_rad_time.gif

Try to absorb as much of the radiation as possible with your groin region. After 5 minutes and 12 seconds, however, you may become sterile

nuc_vis_building.gif

After exposure to radiation it is important to consider that you may have mutated to gigantic dimensions: watch your head.

vis_high_windows.gif

If you\'ve become a radiation mutant with a deformed hand, remember to close the window. No one wants to see that shit.

vis_high_stay.gif

If you hear the Backstreet Boys, Michael Bolton or Yanni on the radio, cower in the corner or run like hell.

bio_vis_resp.gif

If your lungs and stomach start talking, stand with your arms akimbo until they stop.

expl_vis_dust.gif

If you are trapped under falling debris, conserve oxygen by not farting.

expl_vis_drop_roll.gif

If you lose a contact lens during a chemical attack, do not stop to look for it.

vis_car_wire.gif

Do not drive a stations wagon if a power pole is protruding from the hood.

vis_rad_shield.gif

A one-inch thick piece of plywood should be sufficient protection against radiation.

That wasn\'t a very nice thing for a fireman to say, and in earthquakes it\'s not true.
Under a doorway you are less likely to be hit on the head by fixtures or plaster falling.
If the building collapses it won\'t likely save you but it could. In the Mexico city earthquake of about a decade ago, a man was found alive after 3 or 4 days in a completely collapsed building, standing in a doorway pinned by rubble, but the door frame had kept a roughly man-sized pocket of space free and he was unhurt.

Vince; We really need a tongue in cheek smiley.
Most of the Emergency Services people I know have the same sense of sarcastic & twisted humour. I suppose it helps them survive the Sh*t they have to deal with on a routine basis. And to be truthful Firemen do a job, I couldn\'t. :)

Having known a lot of policemen, firemen and ER doctors, I can honestly say that a lot of people who work in these jobs develop a grim sense of humor. Helps keep them sane.

those pictures are funny... last year at my high school we started doing what is called a \"RED drill\" its basically how to protect yourself against a school shooting, we all have 2 doors in each room, so inorder to protect yourself stand between the 2 doors, cover all windows and lock the doors. then the shooter wont know anyones in there! we all thought it was stupid, cause first off we are one of the smallest schools and anyone who would be a shooter wo uld come from the inside, thus, locking the doors would actually cause your distruction if you couldnt get them open quick enough.
