primer over primer

hey all, I have a small problem.

I have been working on my mini's and while I was tediously working on my basecoats, I realized something.

My mini's are primed with chaos black spray from GW, I have heard that this really is not a great primer.

I can easily get Krylon so I was wondering can I go over the black GW spray with the Krylon spray. Oh, and when I will use the krylon I know to only lightly dust the mini don't cover the whole thing.

Also, I've noticed when I strip my mini's with Simple Green it will not take off the primer. Why is that?

thanks

My 2c

There's absolutely nothing wrong with Chaos Black.

Krylon is okay...but it is a general craft spray, not specifically designed for minis and goes on too thick IMO.

Going over Chaos Black with Krylon will almost certainly end up with you losing detail.

I don't have access to Simple Green but I can say that an overnight soak with Fairy Power Spray will remove primer. If they are metal minis and you want to remove the rimer try some cellulose paint thinners.

You wont see the primer once you have painted the mini so I don't fully understand your problem.

EDIT: I use Army Painter primer at the moment and am quite taken with that, especially the range of colours available.

i was trying to paint on some of my basecoats and it was taking me a long time, even with a 1:1 mixture, I just kept seeing black.

ok, so i guess my question is what is the best way to strip primer from a plastic mini.

thanks

Well, I've found Fairy Power Spray to be pretty effective...I guess that's similar to your Simple Green???

If that's not working I guess you might want to try something a bit more pigmenty, like GW's Foundation paints or, give a light dusting of white primer. Just spray from the top and then you can pretend you were going for a zenithal effect;)

I've only stripped metal figures so far, but the simple green worked just fine on the primer for me (and these had been primed/painted like 20 years ago.) Soaked them for 24 hrs, then a soft toothbrush and some soap and water did the job pretty well for the most part. I had to re-soak a few that had some deep recesses that didn't get fully clean, but aside from the soak time I don't think I spent more than 5-10 minutes cleaning up a figure. Not sure what simple green does to plastic though...

It's not really a primer, by all accounts it's just black paint.

You could, in terms of priming it's not the ideal way to go but if you're doing it to lighten the colour overall it'll do the job. If you still wanted to give this a try warm the can first and really shake the heck out of it, you'll stand the best chance of not obscuring detail.

Not strong enough? Didn't leave it for long enough?

I've used Pine Sol to great effect, on plastic and metal. The only thing it didn't remove is some old DA green primer I used WAY back in the day. The only concern with Pine Sol is that it WILL soften the plastic if you let it sit too long (like overnight)

I did a bunch of paint stripping this weekend, testing Simple Green against 100% acetone. The Simple Green really did the trick, stripping the older minis to the bone in minutes.

However, the more recently primed ones (with Krylon) still aren't loosening up; they've been in the bowl about 16 hours now, and it's barely coming off, even after brushing.

I know others swear by it but, I really can't get on with Krylon....always seems far too agricultural for my tastes:)

I'm confused....the OP is stripping the minis because he 'heard' it was not a good primer? But, no personal problems with it?

Unless I noticed something like covering up detail, I wouldn't even bother. Just chalk it up to a lesson learned and move on.

It's probably a question of semantics but, as Einon said, I doubt Chaos black can be considered as a primer as it doesn't appear to have any chemical reaction with the surface. Therefore, it's just an undercoat??

I don't know of any bad stories regarding Chaos Black other than the famous batch several years ago which simply didn't appear to work as it should and was discussed at length on these very forums.

Probably black might not be suitable for his painting method? Natalya uses a thin white spray over black primers to assist with highlights.

I've never had any luck stripping with Simple Green. But Dawn Power Dissolver rocks and didn't damage my horse resins. (A much more fragile type resin.) It gets off primer too. Lately I've been using Vallejo Spray primers and love them. Duplicolor primers are also very good as they go on smooth but you have to be careful not to over-apply because they will fill in detail since they are an auto primer. I've had bad, bad luck with Krylon primer so I don't touch that stuff any more.

Much appreciated. (and unfortunately true)

Just for Men, perhaps Finn?

I'm happy to be a grey head.
Just remember:- There may be snow on the roof but there's still a fire in the hearth!
:smile-big:

Perhaps another job for the Chaos Black? :D Mind you I can't talk - I've started getting my first grey hairs at 14.

On topic - I've never had a probem with Chaos Black spray from GW, it's what I use exclusively as primer/undercoat/the paint you put on before you put the colour on. Granted I do have to put a fair few thinned out coats of base colour on but I always just conisdered that to be normal.

As for stripping, we don't get Simple Green over here in the UK, I used Mr Muscle Oven Cleaner which is OK - not brilliant but OK (aiming to try Dettol next).

Look no further than Fairy Power spray in the green bottle....Seriously, it's the dog's gonads for stripping paint:D
