Primer problems!

Hi, First time post so go easy on me!
It has been 29 years since i last painted a miniature and i wanted to get back into this fantastic hobby. I have started to paint a 54mm Knight and have had no real problems only that my painting abilities need to be refined. I also started a 1/10 young's miniature bust and have primed it using Mr Surfacer 1200 primer. Trouble is the paint will not stick to the model and the primer is acting like a waterproof barrier.

The white metal 54mm mini was fine with this primer and i did not degrease the mini before priming. So my question is because i did not degrease the resin bust as it caused the primer to act this way?

Any help would be much appreciated oh and is there a search function on this forum? Because i can't find it anywhere.

Welcome to the forum! You've actually answered your own question :) Resin miniatures need a thorough wash in warm soapy water before you'll get any paint to adhere. Basically in the manufacturing process a resin mold is covered in oily release agent, white metal tends to only have a dusting of talc (or nothing). I tend to wash my resin components, tidy up and assemble the piece and then rewash to make sure there are no greasy marks at all left.

I've never used Mr Surface 1200 before, I tend to use an automotive spray to prime resin and then a regular coloured spray as an undercoat.

The search tool is in the top toolbar - you'll need to click the little "T" icon to search text else it always defaults to searching pictures.

I don't know that not washing is the sure cause here - usually you'd have problems with adhesion of the primer itself, not with the paint over the primer. A lot of spray primers can exhibit this kind of problem for one reason or another (no single cause) but there is one common denominator when you get this, the surface of the primer is too smooth and/or shiny. Reports of adhesion problems with water-borne paints over Mr. Surfacer primers are not that uncommon, so they seem to be somewhat prone to this.

I would try cleaning the casting with hot soapy water, giving it a gentle scrub with a stiff-bristled brush. Then rinse well, dry thoroughly and see if your paint adheres a little better.

You can find the Advanced Search page, preset to search the forums, here.
