Primers

Does anyone have favorite primers? I\'ve tried GW, and I\'m not very happy with it. Maybe I just don\'t know how to use the stuff or something. Seems to go on too thick. The last time I used it, it was really messy. Bubbles in the paint, real thick in the recesses, very disappointing.

I\'ve also used flat spray paint from Wal Mart, in black or white. Dirt cheap, goes on good, and not too thick. Need to throw away the can before it is completely empty, as it gets splotchy then.

Any good suggestions, anyone?

My favorite now is Rustoleum. It\'s under $4 for a can, covers smooth and has the added bonus of being rust and lead rot protector.. The only problem is they do not make a \"primer\" for black.. but they have Grey and Terracotta... WHo the heck would use terracotta for priming something? Wouldn\'t it be easier to prime white and PAINT terracotta on? Oh, well.. I\'ve found that the flat black works just as well as a primer and doesn\'t warp plastic even though it sez it it enamel...

I like Krylon Primer, goes on nice and smooth, and doesn\'t kill the detail unless oversprayed... it\'s also fairly inexpensive compared to say GW primer...

I\'ve been using Testor\'s Dullcoat (It\'s two, two, two tools in one!) and have recently experimented with Testor\'s white primer. Before these I used Krylon\'s, but I always had a problem with grainy surfaces.

To chime in here I like the Vallejo Game Color paint on primer and the GW paint on primer too. Both are white. I prefer paint on since I feel I can control the application better and it lasts much longer than spray.

Does anyone know a good black paint on primer available in Germany? I only find white primer and use regular black paint when wanting to prime black.

As long as it\'s not an autobody primer it should be fine (autobody primers I hear are *supposed* to fill in crevaces!).

Personally I use Armory gray brush on primer but I think Armory isn\'t around any more.

I like the Reaper brush-on. I\'ve tried the Iron Wind Metals, but find it has a strange, if very smooth, consistency.

I use brush on because of the high heat/high humidity area I live in. I\'ve yet to get any spray primer to work right, and I\'ve tried about four different kinds.

Of course, standard days of 90 degrees and 80-100% humidity doesn\'t help.

GW black primer works fine for me. I don\'t like paint on primer because it takes too long, and I can cover any missed bits of the spray anyway.

If you have problems with the GW spray primer going \'bubbly\' on you, you might try the armory spray on primers. They have worked like a charm for me. One that I would not reccoment is the Citadel spray on primers, as I have had some most heinous problems with them

No Favorite...

Just until recently, I hadn\'t had any luck with spray on primers. I would just take the extra time to brush on.

But, after experimenting more with some of the \"cheap-o\" Wal-mart paints, I am starting to like them. The key for me is to shake the heck out of the cans and paint in short bursts.

GW work great for me. The trick is to do it in short stages, I spray one side a little, then spray the other, go do something else for 10-30 mins, come back spray again, repeat until happy. I also don\'t bother getting total coverage, if its missed by the spray its not going to get much wear and tear, so those bits just get touched up with normal paint.

I\'ve tried a lot of different primers.
For spray on Halfords grey is good ( halfords is a car accessories chain in the UK ).
I now use a paint on primer by Blackfriars intended for fences and garage doors.
Interioe and exterior priming pain, galvanised metal primer.
Spirit based and sticks to metal very well giving a cream smooth finish takes acrylics very well.

I reckon the halfords stuff is fairly good, black white and grey. I also use humbrol enamel for black undercoat, I find it runs into all the nooks and crannies very well, without being too thick (ideal for chainmail).

GW is fine . . . but somebody said it - shake the f*** out of it - turn it upside down etc. That\'s just a good rule of thumb for all aerosol stuff - primers, sealers etc.

Right now I am using Tamiya Fine Surface Primer.

This stuff is a little expensive ( about the price of a cheaper blister pack ) but so far I have found it does a perfect perfect job.

Once the can gets close to the end, it will get a little bit grainy, or maybe its just me not cleaning out the spray button.

It is a fine spray though, it comes out rather smooth and fine ( duh the name ), I have tried other paint cans and so far, I stick with this.

Back around the end of the last Ice Age, when I was in Junior High , Rustoleum was a single product - a rust inhibiting undercoat for things like lawn chairs, your kid\'s wagon, etc. The only color it was available in was Terracotta - or Rust. It was inteneded to be sprayed right over any existing surface - paint, rust and all. I guess they used Teracotta because it was good at covering whatever color was already there as well as the rust. I guess it\'s a holdover from those days.

By the way, their big marketing deal was that it contained fish oil!

I think a lot of people don\'t shake the cans enough, or they don\'t do the all important spinning of the bottle (I like to roll the little ball the length of the can). to make it fun, you can make it into an exciting musical beet and get carried away and dance and dance!

PS I\'m just trying to get rid of how bored I am. I\'m at school right now and it is dull!

Are you sure that you mean Rustoleum and not Krylon? I went looking for Primers the other day at Walmart. I found Krylon in White and Terra cotta and Rustoleum primer in White and Rustoleum Auto Primer in Black.

Since I like priming armoured models in black, I went with the Rustoleum Black Auto Primer. I noticed on the can that it was made for use with lacquers and enamels. (I asked my neighbor, a former sales manager for Rustoleum, his opinion. He said that the Auto primer would be good for metal but he wouldn\'t use it for plastic because it would chip off.)

I respect your opinion and I would appreciate a little clarification.
