Priming and Glazing

Hello all,
Long time reader, first time poster here.

I am just about to start painting a Space Marine army and I am interested in pushing the limits of painting abilities on these guys, since I am converting the whole army. I want to use glazing to blend up the highlights and just wanted a little help on some things.

1. Does it matter what colour primer I use? I read an article that said if you were going to using glazing you had to use white primer. I\'m looking for a \"muted\" style of paint here and what the mini\'s to look suitably \"dark\"(I\'m using a dark blue/grey and red paint scheme.)

2. I bought some vallejo mediums to use(seems everyone recommends these when glazing) but I couldn\'t remember what to buy, so I bought two different ones. \"Matt Medium\"(btl#540) and \"Glaze Medium\"(btl#596). Which one is the proper one to use? The Glaze Medium seems to be very thin while the Matt Medium is quite thick. Is the matt like a matt varnish?

3. I have read a tonne of threads and other articles about how much medium to paint to water I should be using. But I couldn\'t find anything consistant. I read the article on Brushthralls and they are saying to use alot of it 14-20 drops. What do you guys and gals use?

Sorry about the length of the post, but I just wanted to make sure before I start laying paint on some of these models.

I am sure I will have more questions once I begin painting, so sorry about that too. LOL.

Thanks in advance to all who reply.

was it the vincent hudon artricle you reda? if so, its not esenatial to use white, just easier in his method. some people doa mid tone and glaze on shadows and highlights , he does brightest colour first and then shadows. if you want to see some dark blending, go to discuss submissions and take a look at Jakob\'s death company

Granddad!
yeah Glaze medium is the one for thinning, I tend to use about 12:1 ratio

matt medium is for making a gloss paint dry matt, and you only use a few drops

Thanks for the replies.
@mick - you use 12 drops of medium with one drop of paint?... with how many drops of water? Or is it more of a personal touch/taste thing for that.

Hopefully should be finishing up my GS work and start painting by the weekend. I \'ll be posting a paint log in the WIP section soon.
