Problem with GW Paint

Hello everyone,

Here is my problem, I\'ve use a brand new pot of Chaos Black for 2-3 paint sessions, and left it open about 20-30 min each time. But now the paint (which was quite liquid, even too much compared to old paints they sold a few years ago) is not way far from liquid, not solid but very chubby (i don\'t know if that\'s the correct word sorry), very less liquid, that\'s it.

Do you know why? How could I fix this because this happens frequently to me with all sorts of colours :(.

Thanks in advance for your help :).

Regards

Use a palette and close the caps while mixing colours.

Just add water to the paint, that\'s the simple solution. Add a few drops of water and shake well! I usually add some paint extender (drying retarder) too, it is a good idea if you have that.

All paints go this way eventually, if you\'re not careful.

GW paiont pots are notorious for drying out quickly this is due I think to the larger surface area which is exposed to the air whilst open thus resulting in the paint thickening quicker as the paint dries out. The way to combat this is to add a few drops of water every now and then and stir it in, also when you finish using it then add a few more and let that cover the surface this should prevent the paint drying out too quickly. I use only GW paints and if you take the time to do this with all the colours that you use you should have no more problems.

Ok I\'ll try that thanks :).

What\'s the liquid you suggested to prevent the paint from drying also please?

And, will adding small plastic balls to the pot help mix the paint?

Thanks in advance :)

It\'s nothing wrong with the paint, it\'s just doing what it\'s s\'posed to do, like any other paint. Dry!
basically don\'t leave the pot open when you are painting, transfer a quantity to the tile, then close the pot.

What the others said. I personally have always used a palette.

Though the main problem with GW paint for me is the price when compared to other just-as-good-if-not-better brands. So I don\'t buy it any more.

you could always order a bunch of dripper bottles from Western Plastics. Put the paints in them and thus avoid the drying problem...

Or just use paints that already come in dripper bottles. I know, in so many areas, GW\'s are the only decent mini paints available and they are of good quality, but the packaging is designed for the hack that dips brushes straight into the pot.

What i tend to do when im using my GW paints is use a lid of a spare pot, i use the paint out of the lid and cover the open pot up with the spare lid. Just have a small bowl of soapy water to rinse the lid in before you use it on a different colour:idea:

But the thing with non-GW paint is that they don\'t have specific paints like the Ultramarines Blue or Dark Angels Green which save time just to have them in a pot like that.

Anyway, what other better/cheaper paints do you recommend :) ?

GW paints!!!!!

I have had the same problem for years and every now and then add water.... now that GW paints have gone up to £2.00 per pot for 12ml.. i am now changing to Vallejo paints, £1.40 per pot 17ml amd more choice of colours, just harder to purchase here in UK...:)

Ehm, actullay Vallejo has made an entire range with paint that closely match GWs (Vallejo Game Color I beleive), also the names are so that you can easily change ranges. I personally use both ranges mixed, as I like the somewhat less liquid qualities of GW sometimes over the more liauid Vallejo, but Vallejo paint cover much better (the GW sunburst yellow problem...) Also I like the skin colors of Vallejo, but that\'s kinda personal taste.

Of the ones I use...

Vallejo - both model and game
Coat d\' Arms
Gamecraft Minipaints
And just about any variety of Craft acrylics for painting bases.

Speaking of GW Paint problems...

The almost impossible to remove GW Lids on the older style of paint pots has caused me much frustration, many blisters, and a few tantrums.

I tried many techniques for removing the lids, and even tried using a pair of wide mouthed pliers, only to find that it cuts up the plastic, so even more blisters form when trying to remove them.

Anyhow, this tool works the best IMO...

Called a strap wrench. Creates an incredible amount of torque, without damaging the lids. Plus they are very cheap!

Vikey, if you tighten the lid first before trying to undo it, and or banging the jar on a firm surface.
either technique works most of the time

Yeah, I\'ve done those things as well, and it does work for some. But I have a few that are just plain stubborn...no matter how much banging and squeezing I do!
