Problems thinning new Citadel Base paints?

Have people been having trouble thinning the base paints with water?

I was using Khorne Red today thinned about 3:2 wateraint (best guess) and after performing well for half a dozen models being batch painted it started to act like overly thinned paint on a gloss surface. Can't figure it out so I'm wondering if others are having any interesting experiences. The paint was being applied on top of an earlier layer of Khorne Red washed with Nuln Oil.

Apart from a few Citadel paints bought this month all my stuff is in storage so none of the usual additives on hand. I'll be picking up some Vallejo matt medium shortly but that won't help tomorrow...

I'll add a little dish washing liquid to the water jar as a start.

Also base paints don't smell that good damn it

Only thing I can suggest is to use the new lahmian medium (flow improver basically) instead of water, or do a 2 water: 1 paint: 1 flow imp etc, I found this helped.

It's a new formula so it will be a bit diff than what used to. Also some of the pigments react diff drying faster etc than others.

I found this when I tried them out in store. Thought it was due to there being oils from ppl's hands on the test models or something of the kind. I hope that as the case, as I do like thinning my paints

Your problem is caused by the surface tension of the diluted paint being too high to wet the surface. This can be solved by using a matte medium as suggested above or by adding dishwashing soap to your water you use to thin your paints with. That will keep the durface tension low enough to wet the surface.

It certainly does look like it's just a surface tension thing but what leaves me confuzzled is that it was going on very nicely on for the 6-odd minis prior. I'll have another play soon and see how it goes (with dish washing liquid in the water).

With the Base range being a new formulation I should make sure I've really shaken the pot as that could matter.

well, its possible that the paint may have separated on the pallette but that shouldnt make any difference to the wetting. The paint would still go on, the coverage would just be guff. Like someone else said, it could be a dirty surface? Bit of a strange one that.
