Problems with nuln oil

Been painting black armour on my space marines and finally my badab black wash ran out woe is me lovely stuff it was to. So got out the nuln oil wash. Now let me say while I hate GW with a passion there is in my experience nothing wrong with their paints which I have happily used for years......but. Anyway put the nuln oil on looked ok smelt better than the swamp marsh smell of the badab black but as it dried before my eyes the paint job began splitting in the seams and creases right through to the underlying plastic!

So obviously very upset considering all the time and effort put into the mini upto that point.

So has anyone else had the same problem? Or is it just me with a dodgy batch?

That sucks mate. I've never used that wash so carnt comment on any adverse effects.
Ive been using less & less inks of late in favour of washes of paint.
Will the marine need a total repaint?

I used it the other day on a miniature I'm doing for fun to test it out and it was fine. Sounds like you got a poor batch OR there was something else wrong with the painting / undercoat / primer / prepared plastic of the miniature. Try it on a test miniature, see if it does the same thing. If it does then you know the issue is with your pot of the wash, if it doesn't then it may be one of the other things I mentioned.

Ah hah that is most likely what is happening I thought it was the paint peeling in the crevices but the colour of talk and the light grey of the plastic is very similar and as you have had a similar experience this seems the most likely explanation! Will have a look at that link and get a non gw replacement.

Fffffffff yet another wonderful product checked by the world famous gw quality control brigade!

Not just me cop a load of this link

http://privateerpressforums.com/sho...Frosting-quot-on-minis-after-using-GW-washes-!

So talc and crackle and yes I did thin with water which never had any adverse affect on the old range. Going to buy AP black wash and throw my nuln oil in the bin.

Remind me again why are we surprised when GW replace perfectly good old stuff with inferior new stuff? Are they just doing it to p*ss us of or for the lulz?

It's why I am slowly branching into other paint lines. They were solid for so long, but I am staying away from their washes now. I just thin their paints to a wash like consistency when I need a wash now. Plus i can make custom mixes and it gives me more color variety and control. I have heard good things about secret weapon washes as well but they are stronger and need more thinning.

Had the chalky residue with my pot of Agrax, but strangely my Nuln Oil is ok so i guess its a batch issue. When i need to thin my washes i use matt medium as well as a little water, and this has solved the problem for me.

I've not really had a problem with the couple pots of Nuln I've had - in fairness providing you ensure they're mixed properly I've found the new washes are as good as the old ones. Can't fault the Army Painter ink that I've tried either other than it's much more viscous than GW washes, so I'm finding I always have to thin it - they mix together quite successfully too when I've done wet on wet washes.

I'm not a very professional painter, but I started mixing my own washes and stuff last year. You get a huge bucket full compared to a little container for a couple of bucks, it's only the initial purchase of ink that's a little more expensive.

Buy artist inks/medium/flow retarder/improver and mix. I found a recipy over at dakka that works great.. Think it came to 30 dollars, and I also found some spiffy dayglo pigment to use.. :)

That really sucks,

Not sure if this would work for you, but Secret weapon washes by secret weapon miniatures have become my main washes this past year. Truly a wonderful selection for any project. Oh and occasionally I just take some airbrush medium and a few drops of the paint color I want to make a wash and mix it up in a spare dropper bottle. Sometimes takes a few tries to get it to flow right, but the cost is almost nonexistent.
My own horror story involved losing about 80 hours of painting when my spray sealer decided to cover my figure in goo once... *the day before a big tournament*

Just a suggestion, try calling GW and telling them the issue your having, last time I got a bad pot from them, they sent me a new one free of charge.

Hope it works out for you,

Ronin

I had a similar problem with the old washes, if I added any water to them they went very glossy, not what I was looking for. Basically, don't add ANY water to them, don't even use a wet brush.

With the new GW washes, shaking the pot initially when you get it is a must. A good hard shake for a minute or two will stop the issue you are having. I prefer the new washes to the old since they stain surfaces much less while still providing a nice shade in the recesses. I have had no issues when i've shakened them. Otherwise you get problems like the weird chalky finish and the uber shiny finish. Once shaken, they will be fine to use unless you leave your paints for months (like i did while being addicted to an MMO).
