ok the title is a little big .... exaggerated, i\'ve just one question:
how do you do the fading between the background and the foreground?
example:

Hi there my guess is that it looks like they put the photo there and then used the airbrush option around the edges

The easiest way I think is to use the eraser tool. Use it on a brush setting (the airbrush type one (fuzzy looking not hard edged)) and adjust the eraser opacity (on the bar at the top of the screen). You\'ll need to do it in a few stages... ie go around the image then click your mouse button again.... this will erase the same amount after each pass. This will eventually fade it out to nothing.

Nah, that\'s a dirty lie :p The \'easiest\' way is actually with the gradient tool, which I think may not be available in some older versions of photoshop.

The gradient tool, if you have it, is in the pull-down menu with your paint bucket. You need to either hold the mouse button or double-click, depending on your version.

Make a new document. Set the colour you want to be on the bottom to your secondary colour, and the colour you want up top to your primary. Then pick the gradient tool, and draw a line from the top, to the bottom.

BAM! Instant blend. Now just paste the minis onto this.

I think Joshua meant... how do you fade the detail picture of the minis head into the background.... like in the pic he used as an example (top right) - and not just the graduated background ;)

use the ecliptical marquee tool and set the fether to around 5-20 (depending on the image size) then edit copy and edit paste. Move it to where you want it.
