Prophecy's WIP Thread

So... I've been lurking long enough that I think it's time to start my own thread. I have a pretty big backlog of stuff I'd like to get done, and maybe this will help keep me motivated.

I played Chaos in WFB waaaaay back in 6th or 7th grade, but then never really touched it since. My best friend here in Kansas got me into 40k (and the majority of stuff here will eventually be my pups), and I wanted to do something cool for him for Xmas. He has three armies; 'Crons, CSM and Da Orks, and he was just complaining the other day about how his Warboss wasn't "Orky" enough (it's just the blackreach guy, and he's all about the converting madness).

So.... I spent last night poking around my apartment looking for inspiration and came across a box of old toys. One of them was this arm-that I have no idea where it came from-and something popped. Was up till 4 this morning working on this guy (and yeah, i'm at work now. Hurting.). There's an image I have in my head, of one of the X-Men standing on a broken sentinel reaching up into the sky. At first, I was just going to do a little greenstuff around the base, but the arm is heavy and the rocks proved necessary.

Caveats: this is my first ork, this is my second greenstuff attempt, this is my first base with anything other than straight flocking, this is my first major conversion, and I've only been painting for about a month now (after not doing it for 10 years). Without further ado:

What I started with (used a Nail to pin it, and at first the rock was just for ballast):

Liked the rock, added more:

Don't have a good picture of it, but that's a piece of a feeder, or track behind it, just to round it out:

ynwWb.jpg

Drilled into the arm and pinned the foot just to see where it would sit. And yes, the ork's legs and body are the old WFB box set. As are a number of bits used. It's funny how hard it is to tell the difference with Orks:

yeIFq.jpg

A deffkopta that I found in my bitz box (that I inherited from a different friend) and cut up for bitz. I didn't feel bad, as I only had half the thing and the Black Reach bits are pretty cheap on ebay.

1bSkX.jpg

A bit off an old toy (I think Star Wars Sandtrooper?) with pieces from the Deffkopta and part from some random vehicle sprue I had in my bitz.

otEUT.jpg

Nifty powerpack for a Cybork, but not "Orky" enough. What makes it Orky, I ask myself? Spikey bitz and trophys:

ithYF.jpg

Modified base. I didn't feel comfortable cutting up the legs and positioning them to the base, so I positioned the base to the legs. He's supposed to look like he's standing on the defeated remains of some Xenos dreadnought-type thing. Like Wolvy or Cyclops (or whoever) on that crushed Sentinel.

uWnOH.jpg

A gobliny thing I found in the "Fantasy Swarm" box I had from years ago (how cool is he?). Because grotz make everything better:

Head and backpack pinned:

agReM.jpg

Grot on the arm. It's amazing what you can do with random bitz of broken plastic when it comes to Ork guns. Still need to reshape or GS the foot to remove the gap:

0wFKL.jpg

Alltogether now, with a greenstuffed arm to hold the big shoota and a looted SM shoulderpad (mostly to hide my crappy gs skills):

FDNtC.jpg

Found a more Cyborky head. I'm debating whether I want to add one of those nifty metal jaws, a mad-dok style bandana, or just leave it as it is:

hB2M0.jpg

Last night I also dremelled out the arm and added in little pins based on a tutorial I saw for Iron Warriors (he's supposed to be a Cybork, after all). I found a shield with a bit of chain coming off of it (think it's from a WFB Ogre sprue) that I'm going to use for his other shoulder pad.

I think I'm going to paint the shoulder pad with Space Wolf insignia, and add a grey helmet to the base, since his orks were the first army I played in 40k, and also the first army I lost to.

Also plan to paint the rocks and arm in relatively muted colors to help bring out the Ork.

What do you think? C&C very much welcome. I can take it, and I know I need it.

Edit: spelling

A quick update, showing the (mostly) completed model. After doing the painting on the base, I have a little bug thing from another old action figure and I'm going to add a SW helmet to the ground. Let me know what you think!

Actually, on second though, I'm going to GS some kind of wrapping between the two smoke stacks.

Looks very orky!

The only thing that doesn't look right is the banner, with the pole at that angle the banner itself appears to be defying gravity! It might look better if you repositioned it so the banner is hanging more naturally?

Hi Prophecy, nice WIP thread, it all looks very nice :good:

As per Breadhead's gravity comment (the banner cloth just shouldn't hang like that), I think the Goblin is mounted at a funny angle, try pushing him back a little, hand in same place but only the toes of the front foot resting on the bracelet, should do the trick. You could try pouring sand/gravel over the base to fill in the gaps between the pebbles & help to give the impression that there is earth below that a huge robot is buried in.

Looking forward to seeing the paint go on! Cheers, B.

Absolutely. He's only pinned on there so that I can do more basing. And I'm not happy with the grot, so he'll be repositioned too.

Two questions: How do I reposition the banner? I noticed the gravity thing myself, but kind of rationalized it away with the force of thrusting his banner up. It's one complete bit though... Anyone know how to do that without crazy GS skills?

Second, since the arm isn't really obviously one race or another, I was thinking I would paint it like the PP Retribution of Scyrir. The battlemage gauntlets and their big warjacks all have this offwhite ceramic looks with glowing green stuff. It's a great looks, but how do you paint that?

Thanks for the comments!

Trad. banner approach would be to trim the plastic back to the poles (or build new) & use a piece of foil for the banner cloth - old fashioned metal toothpaste tube / tomato puree, etc. Buy new, carefully cut open down seam, remove annoying product, wash & you have a sizeable amount of metal to produce banners (that hasn't been creased to bits). Can be bent into rippley cloth shapes. Keep in mind the direction that the hair on the banner-top device is blowing, if needs be cut it off & reposition to ensure consistency. Cheers, B.

It's how John Blanche did his classic Mona Lisa standard on the minotaur, so yes. Not much experience with it myself though tbh (very long time ago), I'm sure someone else will post with tips. A very gentle scratching with wire wool should be sufficient though, I'd guess. :) B.

It might be easier to reposition the arm or hand so the banner pole is vertical. Although from the picture it's hard to tell if that is even possible or if the back pack would get in the way.

Yeah, I thought about that too, but from a compositional standpoint, I really like the way the arm and banner frame the Boss. Plus, I really like the tattered banner. Would anyone buy it if I tied the ends of the banner to the bottom of the pole? Kind of pull it tight?

Hi Prophecy, here's what I'd try, see it helps give you a better spread of ideas...

Cut banner off orc at wrist.
Cut banner pole just above orc hand.
Pin hand back to wrist so that pole is vertical (little lean to left perhaps).
Extend banner pole 2" so that when the banner is pinned on the bottom of it is roughly level with the tops of the stuff sticking out of his back.
Cut ugly device off top off banner & throw in bin :D
Have a 2nd goblin stood on top of banner, hoding onto the bit of pole that used to have device on it. He can lean out to the left a fair bit to balance the composition.

Just a thought, looking forward to seeing what happens next :) Cheers B.

Ok. More progress. Taking the near unanimous advice, I removed the hand and repositioned it, which makes it look considerably better. I happen to like the ork head thing on the banner, so that stays (sorry BPI).

The banner is actually already on the body, I just didn't get a picture of it this time. Still need to do the base (color suggestions for the giant arm thing?) and the ork's big shoota/custom blasta/whatever warbosses carry. Ooh, and the spacewolves shoulderpad, of course.

I purposefully left the red course, with obvious brushstrokes. I can't decide if it looks more orky that way, or makes me look like a bad painter. I'll probably give it another couple of coats to be sure.

Hard to see in this picture, but his kneepad has that checkerboard pattern that orks seem to love so much. I'm fairly proud of how it came out.

Edit: there we go.

Man, am I a slow painter or what?

Anyway, more progress on my ork. Sorry for the crappy pics, I have those eco-bulbs in my apartment that shine a little blue. And as for a camera, all I have is my iphone.

I wanted to keep the banner simple, and my freehand-fu is rather weak, but I'm still pretty happy with the result. Same goes with the shoulderpad (which still needs it's gray rim, but I'm too tired tonight). Shoulderpad is the pattern one unit of my Wolfguard is using. Simple to paint and I think it's rather effective.

Still need to figure out how to paint this arm. Also, if anyone has a good recipe for feathers (different project) let me know.

cIfEI.jpg

Took my smallest brush and added a small dot of white to each of the lenses. They look pretty good in person. Also fixed the banner, as you can see. A little less dynamic, but I'm much happier with it now.

You can also see the space wolves helmet sitting there (won't be glued until I paint the rocks). It's sad that I spent more time on that than I did on the ones for my own army. Then again, this is meant to be a centerpiece.

Skull is just simple bone with a gryphonne sepia wash. Not a great picture, but again in person it looks like it's been sitting up there for a while.

nkS6F.jpg

Though not necessarily a space wolves icon, the charm on the shoulderpad/shield is the old icelandic rune for "Fire", which also doubled for "protection in battle." It's the one I wear and it's also very easy to paint.

And one more glamour shot. I think I'll go back and redo his "real" eye. Not happy with it.

What do you think? Suggestions very welcome (even if I fight them at first, like that stupid banner).

Ah hah! This is the image I had in my mind when I started this, I think.

Man, I am learning a lot from this project. What techniques work and what doesn't. Also, tin bitz and sepia wash are the two most versatile colors in GW's line.

The more I do on this guy, the less I want to give him away...

think you work pretty fast. i prep't and basecoated a gun yesterday took me 2-3 hours, THAT is slow :silly!:

huge improvement with the banner even if you lost some dynamic and action in the process, totally worth it. i really miss a highlight or two on the ork tho, he looks pretty flat at the moment but i like the darker shade of green, suits him well (id go lighter on the grot/snot)

oh, and great pics for beeing bloody iphone *jealous*

Slow?!? no not at all, it looks as though you're going to complete him this year, brilliant! I've half painted minis from 20 years ago that still count in my mind as ongoing projects ;)

And photos from a phone that are better than many people achieve with a couple of hundred quids worth of camera! Very impressive.

I'm just painting some orc flesh at the moment too, I recommend a quick squizz at Mr. Skellettets WIP thread for some pointers :) Cheers, B.
