Proposed change to individual gallery pages, thougts?

Hi all,
I'm thinking of transitioning CMON to gallery pages like the ones used in the Crystal Brush competition, i.e. multiple images can be presented in a slide show rather than submitters joining them into one collage. I'm soliciting feedback on this while we're developing version 3 of the site. This was a previously requested feature, but there are cons to the pros that I am seeing. Thoughts anyone?

I did like that feature in the CB voting.....It allows for a better view of the different angles.

Lots of users still upload different angles as new submissions, which really sucks for the voter. No one wants to vote on a random rear angle of a Space Marine, without seeing the first pic. The slideshow could potentially fix that issue.

Assuming the technical side of it makes it smooth, I'd be for the idea!

Would this change the Gallery overall listing from the current linear last posted default?
That's how I generally look at stuff.

But As long as we can still bypass a submission I don't see any problem.

It seems to me that there are 2 groups of people who need this feature;

A - massive diorama/ultra detailed display pieces in need of many images to show off the work.
B - people who have so little respect for their own work that they can't be bothered to present it pleasingly.

Catering for group A, thumbs up, any change to show off top notch work better is to be applauded.

Group B, sod 'em. If it means their multiple images appear as a single entry in the thumbnail browser, hurrah, it makes them easier to ignore and if the random next image throws up the slideshow of one, it'll only be once, instead of all 50 images of their bloody brown orc army.

Except I don't like change. I'm still getting used to this new forum software. So leave it as it is so I can keep plodding in my groove rather than having to change track :rotfl:

I think that's a fantastic idea as long as the viewer has the option of bypassing it and going to the next miniature. Can you give your thoughts on the pros and cons? Thanks

Overall I like the idea of having a gallery for every submission. Looking at the Crystal Brush images my main problem was with usability ... it was not very obvious how to view the images at a decent size and only with a workaround (copying the url) was it possible to view the images at 100% (I really dislike all those lightboxes showing images at less than 100% a pet peeve of mine ... luckily not all lightboxes resize the images - go CMON ). Judging by the the feedback on the CB images in various boards around the net it seems I wasn't the only struggling with the size of the images.

Please improve the usability and make it obvious how to view a bigger/full size images and I am all for the change

The main con I'm thinking of is the lack of immediacy that a montage gives you, i.e. you get the full impact immediately without having to scroll through multiple images.

Presumably most people will just submit a montage anyway? Separate shots in the entry just for closeups of big dioramas & the like? If every vote is going to require loading up front, back & side images of every Space Marine entered then my voting is going to have to become more targeted. I like being able to easily scroll up & down a montage to compare views, waiting for each one to load is going to cock that up. I'm unsure now!?

A way of targeting/making optional the lightbox thingy? An average of 8+ in the Gallery? or selecting an Army/unit option brings it up? The rest of us pootle along as normal?

I want more people to vote, not fewer. More pondering required!

I must say I like the immediacy of how it is at the moment. The ability to easily scroll up and down the image/s makes it very appealing to me as it is easy to flick between different views without having to wait for a page to load, or having to flip between 6 or more images to find the one that I want to look at again to check something in the image.
I don't have a huge amount of time to look at images and the idea of scrolling through multiple pages to be able to accuratly vote on a mini would suggest that I will get through less images than the current set up. If as BPI suggests

then doesn't that suggest that the everyday TT quality miniatures that get posted here are going to spend even longer floating in the Browse section before they hit 50 votes?
That said the possibility of reducing multiple submissions with only slight variations of the mini would, IMHO be a good thing. And the benefit to those who make dioramas or other similarly detailed models could as previosly stated be a good thing.
