Well, aside from the "the speed of explosions can show us the behaviour of dark matter" mumbo-jumbo, the point crucial to "Proto-C'Tan": Twin stars, one of them a White Dwarf (ha!); White Dwarf leeches matter off its cohort, until it accumulates enough to go nova, which reduces it to WD status again, and it leeches on. Potentially this could go two ways: a)the WD keeps a bit of residue matter after each nova, thus it gains mass until in one cycle it goes supernova (read "kablooie"), or b) it doesn't, and just keeps reducing the bigger star, until that becomes unstable and goes kablooie.
b) would correspond to the MO of C'Tan before they got their Necrodermis bodies courtesy of the Necrons.
