head is looking good, are you still putting the little clown on top?

Cheers! This version of the monster will not feature a rider (for various reasons). I do however have plans for a bigger, better and creepier Puppet Monster complete with rider. It'll be my equivalent of a dragon!

Gashnak: thank you so much for taking the time to help. I printed out your image at work and have used it as reference material for tonight's sculpting session. You are very kind!

interesting that you're working in two putties. Do you find you like greenstuff or procreate more?

To begin with I probably planned to sculpt the whole figure in Procreate! I started him back in December and last year I was working in Procreate a lot. I prefer PC to neat GS but GS mixed with MagicSculp has a lot going for it. PC is great for detail but sometimes it's lack of stickiness can be a nightmare. My Mad Clown sculpt (discontinued straight jacketed sculpt) was so frustrating as the belt details fell off again and again. All that aside I'd love to start sculpting single figures in PC again next year.

I too found the lack of stickiness frustrating at first with procreate, until i realized that i could literally tack it on with a thin layer of superglue gell, even when it was still soft and sculptable.

Hey Moonmin, since I really love your spirit and drive in sculpting, I wanted to help you a bit and give you some anatomical suggestions with a paintover I did. Hope it makes sense, if it doesn't, just ask!

You should send that to GW, some of their stuff make it look like they need it ;)

OT; That clown is freakin' creepy. Looking forward to seeing the finished work :D

You're welcome. There might be some inaccuracies, because of the unfamiliar angles on some parts and proportions. But eh, it's good to learn anatomy for things like this.

I kind of consider GW a lost cause, I've got the feeling they fired some good sculptors or hired cheaper, crappier ones with limited artistic ability and understanding. And have just a few good ones do the big selling pieces. It's kind of sad. Some of their work is actually pretty good, anatomically speaking, you have to stylize to a certain extent anyway because of the scale.

On the topic of greenstuff not sticking by the way. I personally find the less I handle the green stuff, the stickier it stays, so washing your hands, degreasing the work environment and such, can help. Also, even though lubrication (water, or whatever you use) and such is nice to make things smooth, you have to be minimal in its application and not have it get everywhere. Just use silicone tipped tools so it doesn't stick to your tools and you won't have to use water for that anymore. I've once looked into using silicone gloves as well, but never tried it.

I tried using nitrile gloves once and the putty just stuck to them :-(

Last nights progress: concertina neck sculpted using Procreate. This took approximately an hour and went better than I anticipated. I expected at least two sittings of hard graft so I'm pleased that I can now get on with other parts of the sculpt.

I can't finish the cuffs (or sculpt the frills on the ankles) until I have removed the arms, but I can't do that until I have sculpted his collar! I can't sculpt his collar until I have finished the head (which needs to be sculpted with the arms still in place, to check composition...). I couldn't continue the head until I had sculpted the neck, so it looks like the ball is now well and truly rolling! The end is in sight!

I can't wait to get round to trialing my new jewellery saw to butcher his arms!!

I'm tempted to add a ribbed texture to his forehead before I send him for casting (as in the illustration). What do you think?

Note that gravity is all that is currently holding the parts together. Any gaps should be less prominent when parts are glued in place.

Resin casts should be available by the end of the month. Feel free to get in touch for further information (PM or email "madclownminiatures at hotmail dot co dot uk").

Cheers WGS!

Puppet Monster (& Crawler) casts arrived this morning and are looking great! If you'd like one of your own, feel free to send me a private message. Alternatively you can email me at: "madclownminiatures at hotmail dot co dot uk"

(I'm just cursing myself for photographing the "first one out of the box"! As is the nature of resin casts their colour varies with the amount of pigment added to the mix. I just so happened to pick a nice pale one, which made photographing it a bit more... interesting!)
