Putrus - Round Two

I\'m not the best of sculptors by a long shot, but I was flattered when I got a bunch of requests to get this figure cast up, but unfortunately it has already been painted! :D So I will sculpt a second one.

Here\'s a shot of the original. For more angles of the painted version check out my gallery. Don\'t want to flood the forums with pics :) These shots were taken before I fixed a couple things, the horned skull on the chain was removed and re-sculpted, among other slight tweaks.

So I\'m here to ask all of you. Is this the kind of miniature you would want to buy and paint? Is there a good company who would be willing to buy and cast it?

I would love to sculpt a second one but would like some input before I begin. Obviously I could not sculpt any Warhammer references on it so chaos stars/nurgle symbols have to go.

First up is scale (that\'s what the poll is for anyway). But I\'d also like input on lots of other stuff too.

Should I make different weapon options?
More or less tears/stitching in the clothing?
Different pose?
...etc...

I\'d appreciate any and all comments/criticism.

Thanks :)

I think it\'s great, and it\'d sure be something I\'d love to paint myself :)

My concern would be how easy it would be to cast up? (With the detail you had)

But the pose, etc is great
I\'d say go for the regular 28mm myself - but if it\'s popular (Which I\'m sure it would be) you could always do a 54mm version too

Good luck! :D

Wow - thats a great looking mini, i would definatly love to paint such a mini.

I think it would cast great in resin, have you tried talking to heresey miniatures see if they can cast it for you on a commision basis you keep the rights to it and they pay you a royalty per sale.

keep up the good work - it rocks

Thanks for all the input guys.

I like the sound of the resin casting, and the commission basis for casting. I\'ll have to contact them at some point.

@DaN: Yeah I had thought about the difficulty of casting it. I think I\'ll have to simplify or get rid of some detail (the holes that go all the way through the edges of his cloak, and the holes in his cheek in particular). I\'ll have to sculpt carefully :)

@kramt: The chains were pretty easy. I\'ll do an article at some point but here\'s the basics.

First I took some very small rectangles of putty and used these for the links that are flat against the robe. Put them in the areas you want the chain to be flowing.

Then take a needle or small sculpting tool and open up the center of each one. Round the edges of each link as you see fit. Try not to distort them too much.

Then roll out a thin sausage of putty. Cut small lengths and place them in between each link. These will make the half-links that stick up. Tuck the ends inside each of the opened centers you made earlier, there will be enough room.

Go in with a flat sculpting tool and finish shaping all of the links so that they look round enough.

It is definately a grand looking mini, but as you state, the casts made of the model will not be as detailed. first off any GW material will be gone, second the facial details will not be as they are are impossible to cast - which is sad for me because they\'re my favourite part of the mini :|~
Still, if you\'d make a Cast of him i\'d buy one:yes:

Well the facial details could still be there (They are my favorite part of the mini too!) :), I would just have to fill in areas in the mouth to aid in casting, as it would not be easy (if at all possible) to cast it with holes in his cheek. I\'d have to probably make his mouth closed, and I could still include the holes but just have teeth there instead of nothing. (Hope that makes sense).

I\'ll have to talk to a couple sculptors or people with casting experience and see what they would have to say.

I\'m not too sure how long it took me. I\'ve gotten faster at sculpting after working on a number of projects, but this one was done over a long period of time. I\'d spend an hour or two each week whenever I got the motivation. I\'d probably say somewhere around 30-40 hours if I had to take a guess.

Found some time in my hectic schedule to do a quick 30 minute \"Sketch\". hehehe...

This is done in plasticine. It\'s a reference only, not the start of the actual sculpt. Plasticine is very difficult and time consuming to smooth, so I left it a little choppy. I wanted to see how things would look if I was sculpting with the casting process in mind.

Note that the gap between the robe and head is not as deep. The holes in his cheek also no longer go all the way through, but are just indentations (these would be painted black anyway so it would not make a difference). I closed the mouth a bit more. I\'m not sure if I like it that way, I may just close it all the way and make him grinning. That could be more evil looking :D

With resin you may be able to cast those features around the head with out changing the design a great deal, especially the mouth - you could even put an instruction in the pack to guide people on how to remove the bits in the side of the mouth to openi t up again (if they choose to)

The running flesh and screaming mouth is a major part of the attraction on this mini and would be a shame to loose it.

Keep up the great work

Im so jealous :moon:

Jerry Kurl, I love that idea. I could leave the gaps filled slightly to aid in casting, and the painter can drill/carve them all the way through if they wish.

I took a few minutes to fix the face. I made his jaw opened wider and crooked to look like it\'s broken, just like in the original. The missing flesh on the side is sculpted in, but just not all the way through. The shadows here are so dark it looks as if it does go all the way, so I think it can definitely work and still look convincing. I think this could still easily be removed with a drill if the painter desires.

I like the face a lot more than what I first tried in the plasticine. I\'m debating if I should consider adding stitches to the left eyelids. I also think the right side of his face (our left) looks too plain. Maybe I\'ll make a spot of flesh missing there too. Thoughts?

Thanks for all the kind words and feedback :)

I think that stitches in the closed eye would make sense. maybe even broken stitches on the open eye. I think that more missing flesh would be good, the left side does look a bit plain.
