Hey Shawn, you\'re a lot younger than I imagined lol

Here\'s a couple of shots from our trip to the South of France last month - out of th 1253 photos we took there don\'t seem to be many of me to choose from, can\'t think why...

I\'ve been told I look like everything from a gangster to a diddler in this picture. I have 3 kids so I\'m not to fond of the diddler end of the comments but I can roll with the punches with the best of them so it\'s all good. :drunk:

Oh yeah, even though this picture is only about a year old I wear glasses now. At least I have an excuse for why my painting wasn\'t so great before. :drunk:

Looks like work has made me late for this thread, never mind better late than never I guess :D

This is the most recent photo of me taken back in November just before a Mess Dinner onboard one of Her Majesties Sleek Grey Messengers of Death, I\'m on the right :D

Me-on-the-right.jpg

And seeing as we are posting pics of pets as well here is three of the guide dog puppy I helped puppy walk, don\'t be fooled by the inocense she was a food thief and a right nightmare mutt from hell, in the end she failed her training and was deemed unsuitable to be a guide dog.

WG, it has been a long time since I studied military ettiquite. Why the different cumberbuns? I\'m assuming it has to do with rank/rate?

Anyway, one of me babysitting.

Kev, it has nothing to do with rank :D, both myself and the other guy in the photo are the same rank. We are however members of different branch.

The thing with a cumberbund is that rank doesn\'t come into it, each ship/establishment has its own crest/badge along with a colour for that particulare ship, Nottingham\'s colour is green so for a formal evening a green cumberbund with the ships crest could be worn but also black is a general colour and covers everything so to speak.

As well as ships colour and crest we also have our own branch and colours which we are allowed to wear, as I am Marine Engineering (Mechanical) the branch colour is purple and the branch badge is a propellor with a letter M underneath it but because of my rank/rate I had a crown put above so that the cumberbund shows my rank/rate.

You get some really gaudy colours as well and some look as if they have been thrown up on, others are checked or tartan/plaid etc

Sadly a lot of our history has now gone because they changed all the branches last year and restructured everything although being a coffin dodger I got to keep my branch and rank/rate title but given another 5 or 6 years when the rest of us fossles have had enough or have been retired then it will be no more than memories :(

Hope I managed to explain that so you and others could understand it all :D

That is way cool. I don\'t think our navy had anything like that. I remember a couple of \"Dinner Dress White\" dinners - but no cool cumberbuns.

We have our own Mess Undress Uniform as well which is basically a short dinner jacket and golf ball type shirt etc and as well as looking smart it has to be one of the most comfortable uniforms I have ever worn.

Yeah, you get that kind of stuff with 400 years of tradition.

We just got pants with thirteen buttons.lol
lol WHen I first joined up I wore what was called then Square Rig, consisting of bellbottoms, a jacket, collar, silk and lanyard all of which were seperate and had to be ironed differently, if you were over 5ft10in then the bellbottoms had to have 7 creases in each leg at paybook width and represented the 7 seas, for the short @rses like myself it was 5 creases in each leg which was the 5 oceans, I can remember putting the creases in with a damp hanky and litterally standing on the iron to make sure the creases were as sharp as possible :D

It is a shame a lot of the kids joining these days don\'t know anything about the old traditions and most don\'t even know any of the old sayings, a real shame when you think it will all soon be lost to the history books or museums if it even makes it that far.

Well the Navy being its usual PC self Rum is off the menu and has been since just before I joined up :( the Sodomy well that used to illegal but in todays PC World that is now legal but not my cup of tea thankyou as for the lash well that is gone as well although at times I think they should have kept that in as there are far too many lower deck lawyers that think they know it all and at times now it is treated as a booze cruise by the younger lads but that is probably the generation that is coming in now that or its me being an old fuddy duddy :D
