Question for EvilDave - Doomsday!

I was reading about this Hadron Super Collider that they are preparing to turn on in a few days in Europe, and about the people up in arms about how it will create a black hole and destroy the Earth. My superficial understanding of the story is that there is no foundation for their fears.

My recollection is that EvilDave has some sort of particle physics background or occupation and was hoping he could enlighten me/us on this topic.

If others have any opinions about it, please chime in as well!

Oh well, I guess that we will just add another black hole on/in the planet. The other being the Bermuda Triangle/Dragon Triangle thingie.

i don\'t see what all the fuss is about, if they thought there were a big chance of destroying earth i don\'t think they would do it  and if the world ends o well just make it wait until uk gd this sunday lol

 I think Evil Dave is still cleaning up after Gustav... he did say he had three trees down and his chainsaw was gassed up and ready

 all that money...when we all know washers and dryers are blackholes... wonder where that sock or undie went to, well you now know:eek::plol

Speaking of washer/dryer black holes, anyone remember the Ren & Stimpy episode where they were sucked through a black hole and found a mountain of missing socks among other bizarre things? Brilliant!

rofl there was a robert rankin book where they found lost areas of london where missing pens and socks ended up!

Seems as though I heard that they are going to be starting it up soon but will be doing a lot of calibration of the magnets and won\'t be actually doing any colliding for about a month or so.............Gives us a few more weeks to stock up on Ramen and toilet paper.

Yeah everyone knows you can build yourself a black hole shelter out of instant noodles and bogroll.

A black hole will swallow any type of matter in the universe but even it draws the line at eating a pot noodle lol

Oh, oops, yeah...............I was tending to think of the end of things in the \'normal\' way...Post apocolypse etc.....

i just hope it opens a gateway to another dimension of zombies and brings them forward so that i get to finally use my machete on zombies and no more unsuspecting campers.

Don\'t worry. The swiss are veterans with mini black holes. The already have a lot of them in their cheese. lol

Funny I automatically thought of Numbered Bank accounts, opened pre-1936.
But of course I was being seriously Bitter & Cynical.

@ All

well, i´m not Evildave ( btw, hope he´s doing fine ) , but maybe as a college student who got an A in his physics class i might be able to help

first , to be fair, i should tell you that i´m not a particel physicist. I study enviromental engineering, focusing on Air chemistry and pollution. Only someone who has graduated in this field and has at least some years of experience, can give you a complete and valid answer. But everyone who knows at least a bit about physics will tell you that all this doomsday stuff is mumbo jumbo. Nuts. In fact there´s a higher probability that the machine will spawn a living dragon.

Thus said, relaxe and stop listening to all those crazy people , who don´t even have a college education, but thanks to the internet can share their opinoion with everyone. I have followed this whole topic for quite some time now and was amazed from where this whole black theory came.: Some guy who sais he has a degree as a philospoher of science and claims he found the theory of everything.

WOW ,i tell you i was strucked. Some guy without proper college education and a weird title had found a theory, that real scintist are searching for since Einstein discovered relativity in 1905.
But i was even more strucked by the paper he had published on his webpage. Not only showed a complete lack of understanding of basic physics , he also has no experimental data to prove his conclusions - which is a real handicap, since natural science needs experiments that can be reproduced to prove a theory.

So what are these guys going to do ?
Nothing that isn´t done dozens of times every week in several labs. They will accelerate particles and hope that some of them will collide. Since Einstein teaches us that matter and energy are the same (E=mc^2), this particles will hit each other with a huge mass and the \"Explosion \" will produce all kind of particles. IF it works and the theory is right they will produce so called \"Higgs Boson\" particles. The bottom line is, that with these particles we could finally understand how mass is \"made\" and why some particles weight nothing at all.

The critcs claim that \" the energy is big enough to produce a black hole ( rememember a black hole means so much mass in one point of space that it sucks in even the light, because th escape velocity is higher than the speed of light ) that will grow and ultimately suck in the earth.
Theyre scenario goes on by saing \"that this will be the result of a \"head to head impact \"of two particles with giant masses\"

So let´s examine these claims

1. Do you really think that the european electricity network can generate enough power to destroy the world ? i mean seriously ask an engineer of one of the big elecricity companies if they can produce enough energy to create so much mass with a collider that a black hole is created. But give me call first, cause i wanna be there to see his/her face lol

2. The critics talk about \"head to head collisons\". Sure .
Imagine you got 2 men with shot guns , standing face to face with each other , pulling the trigger at exactly the same time. Now, how big do you think are the odds that two grains will hit each other EXACTLY in the middle and how many will just pass each other ? Now multiply that wit 10 million and you know the odds for thsi omnious head to head impact. head to head my ass.

3. The energy produced by this is not bigger than the energy of a mosquito landing on a window

4. Impacts like this happen all the time in the upper layers of the atmosphere. So far this didn´t produce any black holes, but hey it´s been only 5 billion years with hundreds of thousand of impacts per day.

5. Even if all dark powers of the universe are against us ( to quote Terry Pratchett : \"thunder rolled. It rolled a 6 \"), and a black hole is created, it will be unimaginable tiny. So tiny in fact that it will vaporize, because this is what black holes everywhere in the universe do. they loose weight through the so called hawkings radiation ( rather complicated, would take to long to explain it here ). usually this vapourizing and shrinking takes billions of years, because of the huge masses we´re looking at , but since our unlikely black hole is so itsy bitsy tiny, it would only be a matter of milliseconds.

So stop worrying , paint your miniatures, leave your kids in school and don´t cancel any play dates. Unless of course you think a meteorite will kill us all in the next days, which ids much more likely and should be a concern to every upright citizen.

AFAIK, the Hawkings radiation is a theory that hasn\'t been substantiated with physical observations yet (although searches for this are planned). But, on the other hand, micro black holes aren\'t physically observed either, again AFAIK.

But, I agree that I find it extremely unlikely that anything spectacular will happen (at least, anything that the average Joe will find spectacular).

@ritual
yep you right hawkings radiation was never seen in an experiment, but the theory has been accepted and second by many scientists.

plus think of it . if black holes would exist for an infinite time , the whole universe would be filled to the edge with black holes. Black holes have a lifespan that is proportional with there mass. Again, tiny blackhole = short life span

and again the guy who leads the critics here in europe is chemicist. last time i checked, particle physics is not part of there training, and physics is nothing you can learn in your freetime

OK, now you\'ve got my hopes up. If it doesn\'t pop out a dragon I\'ll be mortally disappointed and put all the blame on you :p lol
