Question: Super Clean and Resin

Hi,

So I heard about the properties of Super Clean and decided to give it a try. I was pretty shocked to find that it removed (acrylic) paint very well and left plastic unharmed. It apparently also will remove super glue...

So, I was wondering if anyone knew what the stuff does to resins? Melt?

Thanks!

I would think that it wouldn\'t harm resin if it doesn\'t harm plastic. I use acetone on resin minis without problem but it melts plastic.

Note the strong emphasise on \"think\", though. :)

It\'s an automotive wheel cleaner made by Castrol. I did a quick Google search to refresh my memory whether it was an engine cleaner or exteriors, found it\'s labeled for wheels, and also found a reference on a forum of scale model car builders that they use it for stripping chrome lacquer off their pre-chromed kit parts. My thoughts are in line with Ritual\'s -- since it doesn\'t hurt plastic, I don\'t imagine it would hurt resin. But I, too, have no actual proof of this.

Well get this... I forgot to mention that this stuff will remove the Tamiya tubed gray putty (not the A+B stuff -I haven\'t tried that yet).

I tossed a Suzi fig, I picked up from the CMON Shop, that got oversprayed on primer and it took off all the changes I made so now I have to do that again. Anyway, I don\'t have a sample of resin to throw into the Super Clean, though I guess maybe I can cut out a small bit and putty it over... *cringes at the thought*

Super Clean is made by Castrol but I\'m not so sure it\'s a wheel cleaner...? A friend of mine mentioned to me that it\'s been banned in California for whatever chemical composition might be in it. I haven\'t a clue though. The two bottles I did find might have been old stock. So far, except for it removing Tamiya putty as I had mentioned, it\'s working pretty darned good.

I\'m told brake fluid works nicely but doesn\'t quite clean off well. Super Clean seems to wash off well but only if you don\'t allow it to dry off which allegedly would leave some kind of residue that won\'t come out.

I\'ll post pics if I can manage it...

-I forgot to mention: The stuff, I heard, if left in contact with skin for a while (not sure for how long -I\'ve been pretty good about washing my hands) will basically cause the skin to dry and peel...

I did a quick search and this looks like a blend of an alcohol, a couple of detergents, a glycol and some other cleaning agents, in a water base. As a result I have no idea if it would react with resins lol And resins used for models can be a couple of different types anyway, so it would be a good idea to check on the underside or an inconspicuous spot just to be on the safe side.

Don\'t read too much into that, lots of stupid regs in Cali. You now have to have warnings about the lead content in Titanium White and Zinc White, because of microscopic amounts of lead in the original ores from which they\'re made!

Anyway, if I found the right MSDS it doesn\'t look like anything to sweat over.

Yeah, it\'s 5% non-volatiles. But it\'s totally soluble in water so it should be possible to wash it off.

It has some sodium hydroxide in it, that would do it. Plus detergents are used as defleshers when they want clean bones.
