Question to Avicenna

Hi there!

I originally posted a comment to you on my first post on this site, but i think it got lost in the archives without you seeing it so i thought i\'d re-post it here.

Thanks in advence for any advice you mign\'t have and congratulations again on the site, it brilliant.

Here\'s the message!

To Avicenna: I love your gallery and particularly your Slave to paint site. All the work on there is exemplorary (sp?) I first saw it after doing the Mastercrafted weekend at GW last year with Mike Anderson. Wow can that guy paint!

I have a few questions of you don\'t mind;

How did you guys get together? I\'ve been wanting to raise my profile as a painter for a while now an as yet have gone unnoticed. I think a group like yours can only improve your standards as you swap techniques etc. I think I’ve been going the wrong way trying to win best army at GT\'s etc. If it\'s not a greater daemon with 15 wings at those things you don\'t get a look in.

Are you all pro\'s. I know Mike is on the Books of fanatic etc. but how about you and Richard?

How much time do you spend painting? For me it’s purely a hobby but I try and get 10 to 20 hours in a week. You seem to have a new model each week!! You’re either deathly quick or you don’t sleep!!!

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give, and thanks again for the great site, keep the minis coming and I’ll keep looking at them!!!!

Cheers,

Dom.

P.S. If anyone else want to comment i\'d be greatful for advice from all sources!!
:D

Not to mention a fine scholar and gentleman....sort of lollollollol...best way to raise your profile as a painter is to postpostpost! here, other forums, have your own website, enter every comp you can find(and preferably win it) and sell stuff on Ebay.

One begs the question; How do you know?
Or shouldn\'t we ask? :D

I would like to state for the record that I have absolutely no corroborating evidence to support my previous comment.......

I am here under a mound of elephant pooh

hey guys!

Sorry i didnt answer this earlier, but actually i did.... but it must have been when CMON went down, as i t was there when i last checked but when the site came back it was gone.... so i am not ignoring you Boothdom! I promise!

Anyhow, Thanks for your kind words I\'ll get to answering your questions! Mike, Rich and I met when I worked in GW retail. I was teaching people how to paint and two of the guys seemed to have a natural talent... then they were quickly painting better than me so I decided to introduce them to my hammer and molegrip combo... and ended up getting painting lessons from them!

So they teach me to paint, and i share my wealth of ideas and generally bore them with my incessant chatter whilst stealing their talent... ;)

As the others have said, the best way to pimp yourself is to get a website up, get \'known\' on the major mini-painting forums and paint stuff for ebay linking back to your website.

The three of us are all pros to some extent, but the percentage of our time and wage differs greatly. I paint after my normal 9-5 job (for companies such as hasslefree, GW/fanatic, EasternFront and Heresy...), Rich has a part-time job and supplements half his wage with mini painting (mainly private commissions), and mike works full-time sculpting for GWs Fanatic Studio.

Sorry it took so long for a reply ;)

And thanks to TooShy and Tammy lol

*blushes* AGAIN!

Thanks very much for the reply. Some really useful stuff there.

I am definitely going to get the website up and running, but it may take a while as computers are not my strong point. I\'ve got the GT this weekend then a banking exam (eeughhh!! :|~) mid next week, but after that!!! Expect to see fireworks!!!!

I suppose my real aim is to get into white dwarf or harbinger etc. Obviously, the stuff in there buy you guys is an inspiration (Tammy, yourself, Mike, Dragonsreach etc) but there also some stuff in there that make you think \"Yeah, I can do as good as that!\" and when you get overlooked at events and stuff it can be quite demoralising.

Sorry, went off on a bit of a rant there

The other issue I have is selling stuff. As I paint purely for enjoyment the idea of selling minis makes me feel a bit queasy!! Every mini I do I try and make better than the previous, and the thought of 1. Spending 20 hours on a mini then getting 20 quid for it and 2. Never seeing that mini again! ??? stops me from selling them.

I suppose I’m going to have to stiffen my constitution!!

Anyway, thanks very much everyone for the advice and I’ll definitely take it all on board.

Now, where are my brushes!!!

Cheers,

Dom
