Questions about sculpting

Hello everyone,

I\'m new here so a big Hello first :D !

I\'ve been painting GW models for 3 years now and I just got some greenstuff to try a quite heavy conversion on Space Marine Scout and then it occured to me :\"Why wouldn\'t you try to sculpt your own models!\" lol

So I ask around GW Hobby shops and a guy recommend me this website. He told me I would find a lot of stuff about sculpting here.

Unfortunately, I don\'t manage to find articles about this topic, it\'s seems to me the Articles Archives are messy and hard to browse :(.
BUT I\'m sure I\'m wrong about that, otherwise this site wouldn\'t be so popular, that\'s why I post now lol:

Could someone explain me please how to browse the articles ?

Thanks a lot for your help in advance :)!

Yeah I found them just before consulting the forum lol, sorry for my dumb post :( lol.

Thanks for the article, I can\'t wait to start out in sculpting.

How much time do I have to manipulate the Green Stuff before it totally dries out?

I don\'t sculpt much, but the articles at Lyon Studio look like they have a lot of info. There are links to some other sculpting sites also.

When browsing CMON\'s gallery submissions, you can go to the browse page and choose the Scratchbuilt option under Manufacturer. You probably also want to pick a category (Fantasy, SF, etc.) if you\'re not especially interested in viewing terrain.

Wow thanks for all your help :)! Much appreciated !

I used Green Stuff today for the first time and sadly, I found it quite hard to manipulate.

I mean, in tutorials it really looks like modelling stuff (you know, the one for kids) which not so strong, but green stuff was so strong that each time i tried to spread the GS on a hole, the GS i had just spread flat close to it but stick to what I was manipulating got off ! lol Did I do something wrong?

How can I keep my GS as \"soft\" as possible please? So that I can make cool stuff like robes etc :D lol ?

Thanks a lot in advance for your help :)!

EDIT: Browsing the archives, I just found out that it was better to lubricate the GS with water or a petroleum jelly. What\'s the best please? And if it\'s the jelly, is it vaseline or something else? I use Gamesworkshop GS by the way :)

Smasher, I use both vaseline and water.

After mixing your greenstuff together, let it sit for 20 minutes before you actually use it. It will be a lot easier to work with.. less \"sticky\".
If you are layering green stuff, make sure to wash the vaseline off of the mini before putting new GS on. Otherwise the new GS won\'t stick as well.

Brushing a little alcohol on cured putty allows fresh putty to stick better too (it\'s also great at cleaning up the vaseline). Also, alcohol on fresh putty makes it ultra sticky so adding cured details is a snap too.

Usually, you\'ve got around 2 hours to sculpt it, after the curing stage accelerates and the GS wrinkles or takes odd posses. If you just let it sit there, it\'ll fully cure in 12 hours or a day depending on the room temperature. But you can speed things up by putting your sculpt in front of a lamp. Some even make mini ovens with a tin can and a light bulb, but you have to be careful not to burn yourself or start a fire ;).

Good luck and like Mark (Klute said), post your work in the sculpting WIP thread to get constructif feedback.

just a note

games workshop \'green stuff\' is the same as others. It\'s called Kneadite and it\'s made by a company called Polymeric something something in the USA.

GW charges way too much for theirs and you don\'t get much. On ebay you can get (well, I just did) 108 inches of it for 24 USD....(about 28 or so canadian).

Thanks again for all your help :D!

Ok so I\'ll try vaseline, but then I have to mix it with water or just mix it with the GS or do I just need to put some on the GS that has been freshly applied to the fig ?

Then after I finished sculpting the fig, I can just take the vaseline away with alcohol? It\'s not going to attack the GS ?

Also yeah, my problem was that the GS was way to sticky, so I\'ll let it cure for 20 mins like you said :).

Sorry if I ask tons of questions lol, but I just bought a Space Marine Scout Sniper fig (the one where is crouched) and I would like to sculpt grass on his cape to make it more like a extreme camo sniper but I don\'t want to screw the fig up by not exactly knowing how to use the GS lol :).

Thanks again :), c u

No, don\'t mix vaseline into the GS.

Just put a tiny bit of vaseline on your sculpting tool before you sculpt the GS.
Every so often, re-apply a bit of vaseline.

I typically dip the tip of my tool into the vaseline, then wipe off the extra onto a paper towel.
When the GS is fully cured, use the alcohol to clean the mini.
No, the alcohol won\'t hurt the GS.

surely it\'s easier to just lick your tool?(stop it!)
Don\'t lick a tool that is used to sculpt GS !!!
Sorry about that, but green stuff was first designed for plumbing, not eating!

Water is fine for lubricant.
