Questions about the Cold Heat Tool?

:)I’m researching the “Cold Heat Soldering Tool”, I have tried making armatures using super glue and or green stuff to hold parts together and it isn’t doing the job.

I was wondering if anyone has used one and can tell me it’s good and bad points?

I like the safety feature on this one as I have burned myself a few times using a regular one years ago.:(

I\'ve never used it but since it seems to be able to handle standard solder it should be ok. I never solder and armature unless it has to be very strong and in those cases I go for hot soldering (i.e. silversolder and open flame) which is kind of the other extreme. :)

Anyway, how are you making your armatures that GS doesn\'t work?This is how I make them and GS + twisting holds it together. Main thing to keep in mind is that you need to make sure the metal is locked in by the putty. I.e. with arms: make a T or L shape of it so the putty keeps the wire from turning.

I just twist the wire. If I need a cross piece I will use smakker wire and twist it around the join. Once you cover it in GS and let it dry it holds the armiture together.

I have a soldering iron but I do that stuff for a living so I hate using it at home.

As I\'ve got one but since I bust the tip I can\'t use it at the moment.
The tip seems to be a Graphite like material and doesn\'t burn the skin.
But it still causes the solder to get hot.

It is comfortable to hold and not too heavy for protracted use. But I think it\'ll eat the batteries. :D

Minimaker, I’m trying to do equine armatures and gluing or GS the legs, then positioning them around causes them to pop out of place ( after the GS has cured) ..maybe I’m not twisting the wire enough?

Yes, Mike that’s the one I’m talking about, I want something I don’t have to worry about knocking over...Yes I “am” that clumsy in real life and can’t move fast enough to get out of the way. I’m not into self branding. lol

The price is right for something (about $25) I would be using once in a while.

You can avoid wires popping loose by making sure everything is twisted into eachother. I would do it like this:

1: take a wire and twist it with a loop on one side.
2: cut the look band bned outwards.
3: twist a single wire across the spine leaving enough space on both sides for tail and head
4: bend in shape.

You can then fill up the twist with putty and cover it with a layero putty. \"Freeze\" the sections that should not move any more that way (like hip and shoulders). Stick it in some cork as a holder (you can tie or glue some bottle corks together or use a cork sanding block.

Modderhu, check with your brother wat type of solder he is using. Flame torches are usually used for heavier duty solders that melt at higher temperatures. The ad just mentioned thicker wires of standard solder (lead/tin) as a maximum.

Nah, his soldering iron uses an internal flame to heat the tip. It\'s anything but heavy duty, which is fine since he uses it for electronics. The Cold Heat is applicable, but he\'s one of those people who refuses to use any old junk. Only the best will do. I\'m curious in people\'s experiences with it, since I cannot buy him rubbish.
