Questions from noob!

Hello Coolmini denizens. I have some questions about this site that don\'t seem to be covered in the FAQ, was hoping someone could answer them :)

1) How do all these auctions work? Who gets to post their auctions, and are they anything more than just linked ebay auctions?

2) Most of the minis on this site are pretty incredible- is it worth posting my work here or will it get ripped to shreds? Here\'s where I have most of my current stuff posted http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=44648]http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=44648\"]http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=44648
(non-tank stuff is on the 2nd page)

Thanks, and I apologize if these questions are answered elsewhere

1: The auctions are ebay auctions, and when you post a mini, here, you get to give the item # from ebay, and it provides a handy link for interested parties.

2: Post away. Most people that will actually comment will be constructive and helpful. Will you get ripped? Probably not. Will we tease you because you\'re a newbie in a good-natured manner with the actual intent of making you feel welcome? Yes. We do that. Post your work. Ask for help to improve. Gloat at me when your work rapidly becomes better than mine. And don\'t take ratings too seriously. Just paint for yourself, and enjoy the hobby.

Welcome.

post away, grow a thick skin, then come on over to the forums for an e-pint and a sob. Other forums will oooh & aaah at your work. Here, they will tell you how to make it better. (sometimes that hurts, but mostly - if you listen - it will help.) Being an open internet forum, there are also those to ignor. Experience will help you sort them out (I may be one of them. :p )

Firstly, welcome to our world ixe - your life will never be the same again.

The auction question seems to be pretty much sewn up so I\'ll crack on to my view of the second part. Yes. yes, yes, yes, yes, yes! It is definitely worth posting here and asking for feedback and advice when you do. To me (and it seems a majority of CMONers agree) this is not about competition. [group hug] It is an area where like-minded people can share in an interest together, swap ideas and pointers and generally learn and have fun together. [/group hug] There are some excellent artists out there who will spot things you wont with your posts and some will even tell you in a way that is supportive and encouraging ;) Generally, the more involved you get, the more you\'ll get out of it. So post, check the articles and join in with the forums and get your money\'s worth out of the internet - CMON is what it was invented for :drunk:

I have been here for about 6 months now and my painting has improved so much thanks to this site ( my score have increased from 5.9 for the first submissions to 7.4\'s for the latest) Were a friendly bunch too!!

I like your work, and feel it can hold its own on here. I predict scores between 6.5 and 7.5 as it stands.
Is it all free hand or have you used transfers?

Is it all free hand or have you used transfers?

I am a heavy transfer user on my SoB. I do find myself getting better at freehand though, maybe enough to do some real freehanding beyond just symbols and text some day...

I posted my first model and it\'s hovering around 5. That doesn\'t bother me terribly, except that nobody is posting any comments! Even after I asked for some... I think the pic I posted easily compares to many of the 6\'s and 7\'s I\'ve seen, so I\'m very confused why people don\'t like it ???

hi and welvcome

your model:

i think it looks very good just needs a few points you cant see the face v clearly i know that i always look at the face first so a good face is a good start.

to make it clearer id reccommend getting rid of the chain round her neck.

have you painted her eyes if not do!it is fiddly but there are lots of tutorials round the place (on this site as well) to do it.

photo:
try to get better pics.you say you have a new camera and the pics look good and in focus.

1st- id try using a background some paper or card is fine for this.some people like plain card i prefer a gaduation in colour(blue-white).

also edit the pic to cut out much of the unused space. if you dont have photoshop the GIMP may be the one for you its free if you download it.(google it)

low scores-its a fact of life that most models on this site are,in the views of the painter, under ratednow this is proberly the case but you have to take the ratings with a pince of salt.the important thing is raising your painting level

good luck

If you want detailed feedback, you\'re best off posting a link in the \"Discuss Submissions\" forum. That way you can add a little explanation behind the mini etc and ask for specifics.

This paintjob looks like it is pretty good but you may be suffering from the photo. Firstly you can\'t see much of the detail - some closer shots might help or just crop the pic down, it\'s nicely in focus but a bit too small. Also, noisy backgrounds to the mini can detract attention and focus away from it - try a plain a smoothly graded backdrop like you see a lot of around here. Like I say, I like it and voted well above tabletop :D

Thanks for the advice! I have painted the eye, but it\'s definitely hard to see. That\'s the effect I was going for though, I was inspired by the archangels from Heroes of Might and Magic V - they have hoods that cover their eyes.

I\'m actually having problems getting the pic closer up... My camera says \'focus too close\' when I get much closer to the model and won\'t focus, even in macro mode. Any tips to get around that? I suppose I can just zoom in and crop it since it\'s a 5MP camera and should look fine closer in.

if you have a manual focus setting you can get in a little closer... when you leave it up to the camera what to focus on it is almost always wrong...

yes... 5mp is plenty big enough to crop... i do
