Rackham minis in Warhammer...

Hello all!

I haven\'t played much Warhammer at all. I found a local gaming club and tried a few games there. The people were all friendly and I decided that I want to build my own warhammer army. Starting out small, I want to build a tiny Beastmen army, first 500 points and then 1000 points. The thing is that Rackham\'s models are generally speaking 10 times as good looking and fun to paint, than GW\'s models are.

So I\'m wondering if it\'s against the Warhammer rules to use other miniatures?

I guess it can\'t really be against the rules. But how about the scale? Can I use any units, as long as I put them on regular Warhammer bases of the appropriate scale?

I was thinking of using Kelt Barbarian Giants for a Warhammer Chaos Giant, and Kelt Minotaurs (or the Koren character) for Warhammer Minotaurs. I also think Elemental of Darkness could be used as a Chaos Giant, if it is big enough. Goreth the massive and the goblin War Troll could be used as Warhammer Chaos Trolls. Any comments about these, or the scale of the miniatures. Are the Rackham Giant Barbarians big enough to be used as a Warhammer Giant??

If you\'ve got any pictures of the Rackham miniatures that I\'ve mentioned above, where I can see the scale to compare it to other miniatures, that would be great! I haven\'t seen any of these Rackham models IRL, so I\'m rather lost..

If you ever want to play in any \"official\" Warhammer tournaments and stores and such, then yes, the models cannot be anything but GW models. You should also check with the local club to see if they will play against you if you have non-GW models. I think most people would, but you never know. In terms of scale of Confrontation to other minis, check this link out:

The other problems may be with how units rank up... if you aren\'t using GW minis, units may not rank up properly (not to mention, using Confrontation minis for your units would get expensive real quick - GW plastics do have an advantage there). Anyways, hope this helps!

The shopkeeper of my mini store told me about some Warhammer Fantasy players in his store that have armies that exclusively contain Confrontation minis, and a lot have Conf characters to replace the GW leaders.

You have to ask the folks you might be playing with. I\'ve known players who insisted on using GW pieces, which is why I didn\'t get into the game years ago when I knew players. Most people I have talked to now say they don\'t care.

If you want to enter tournaments, you DO have to use exclusively GW releases.

As to size, Rackham wolfen are WAY bigger than GW beastmen so you need something else for base units. Search for BROO minis and you\'ll find a few really nice beastman substitutes, but they may be harder to find than GW stuff.

Ack, if it\'s for a club game or an in house then there would be no problem. A GW store might bitch about it. But it\'s down to your opponent in the long run. (might make them jealous of course)

i have to say i agree with Dammekkos here GW models are a pleasure to pain, maybe the detail level arent as high as rackhams but at least they dont make such Plain sculpts (witch i like, actually painting lots of rackham) and the casting quality is the best ive ever seen, rackhams metal is weakest, and can easily break, and their minis usually have casting errors..... well thir just different styles.

Yeah I don\'t like the metals Confrontation minis use either, they\'re way to brittle. Not to mention they seem to love making multi part minis with teeny tiny parts where they attach... so small it can\'t even be pinned. On the other hand, I swear I am never going to buy a multipart metal miniature from GW again. They NEVER fit properly, they have horrible gaps. Its the worst on the LotR figures with two halves, lets see, do I want the gaping hole in the front or the back? Bleh. Not to mention slippage of the mold halves or something, where one side doesn\'t line up with the other.

I haven\'t had that problem with GW miniatures, but I know what you mean.. I bought some troll minis from Reaper, and they had a pretty bad casting because the mold halves seemed to have slipped and the two sides didn\'t line up properly. It\'s impossible to fix with green stuff or by filing so I doubt I will ever paint those trolls :moon:

Contact Reaper about it. They\'re quite good about sending replacements for bad castings. I had one that the hand was missing the fingers, and they sent me two replacements Nice folks. GW has a similiar policy, but for some things its just pointless... since I figure the mold will be even MORE worn out on a newer piece than the one I already have. Plus it wouldn\'t really help for things that just don\'t fit together well.

As others have said, it\'s against tournament rules to use non GW models.

However....Stateside, anyway, the rule for conversions is the model must be \"majority\" GW. If you wanted to pull the arms or weapons off a Reaper or Confrontation mini and stick it on a GW model, you\'re generally going to be OK. It depends on who\'s running the tounament, but most people I know mix-and-match bits and have never run into a problem.

I\'d also be surprised if you even got booted from the tourney for having one or two non-GW models. You\'d probably get a zero for your paint score, but I think they\'d let you play.
