Rackham style bases\\Terrain

I\'m a big fan of Rackham style painting and terrain. So much so, I have a problem between choosing my own originality vs copying their schemes.

One thing I would like to copy is there bases... Does anyone know what they\'re suing for the green areas, and what they\'re using for stone areas?

http://www.fireindustries.com/

some pics at the gallery.

It doesnt look like actual sand, or even cork... maybe it is, but if I do a sand\\cork combo and paint it grey and green, the texture just seems off... any ideas what they\'re doin?

*edit*

I look closer at the gallery, and even the plainold board lloks nice.. that kinda grey\\brown concrete type stuff... textured too... so the same question applies.. can anyone figure out how it was made or can be reproduced?

the problem here is the fire industries side of rackham is resin cast stuff. rackam tend to use a lot of cork for thier rock work and clump foilage for wee bushes and the like. stone work they love plaster of paris which can be carved up to suit your needs. hope this points you in the right direction. cheers n beers

FIre Industries, is not part of Rackham.
They are a seperate 2 man company in the UK.
I have the piece you have shown in the picture, and it is all resin.

It is of extrmemly high quality, and the prices are far below that of Forge World, i.e affordable.

I would buy the piece you are looking at then maybe have a go at copying it/using it as inspiration.

Would plaster of paris be suitable to make the things shown here...

Mostly, what I like is the fact the stone work is smooth, but has nice cracks and chunks missing... while using cork tiles gives me a slight \"textured all over\" that I dont like...

I have heard of covering your cork in a thinned down layer of white glue... any effect achieved by that?

I believe they have recently come under Rackham\'s wing.

From the site:
Rackham are pleased to announce the launch of Fire Industries, their dedicated resin miniatures division.

Tasked with providing support for all of Rackhams existing games systems including AT 43. The portfolio will include games terrain, vignette bases, and collector’s figures, as well as large monsters and weapons systems unsuited to white metal production. There will be a range of alternative weapons and upgrades to complement the forthcoming styrene kit releases for AT-43.

Very cool.

Just to stick to one thread:

Any suggestions on how to make a stone wall? I\'ve tried carving bricks into wood, and it just doesn\'t seem right.

Also, any suggestions on a game board in general? Do people use 2 layers, like that pink foam over wood? then glue+sand+flock?

you have a few options with walls etc. you can use textured plasticard, plaster and an appropriate mold, your own modelling clay (das or something similar), carve block shapes out of some builders foam, or you can make a block of clay/plaster and then carve the details (allows you to get nice, crisp blocks)

as for boards, i have never made one myself but, again, there are several options available to you; use expanded polystyrene sheets. they are cheap and you can mount them on mdf or something similar for strength. to keep it strong, you can cover them in plaster coated bandage (like the stuff they use for plaster casts). its also a good idea to keep the edges strong by sealing with duct tape or something simliar

No they are still independant. they are just contracted to produce resin pieces, but still free do other stuff.

@freakinacage, glad you like your stuff, what did you get?
