Rackham vs GW

I was curious to hear opinions on the quality of Rackham vs GW and vice versa. Over the years, I have found myself leaning more towards Rackham, as I feel their sculpting is of far better quality than GW. The painting staff at Rackham is also far better IMHO. The casting quality is usually better also. I have had to contact GW for replacement parts far to many times. Your money goes farther with Rackham when considering the quality of what you get. GW occasionally has a good sculpt (ie Belakor, some dark elves, etc) but its not consistent.

Yes, it is.

That\'s like comparing apples and oranges. Rackham stuff may seem better to most folks because it is something new, But until other companies start selling bits you will Never be able to beat GW for their customizability.

Good boy.You get an A+.You realise the superior quality of Rackham as opposed to GW.

And you can buy bitz at Rackham too.

Trolling?

I must respectfully disagree with the \'trolling\' comment. I had to look that one up and found this definition.

\"In Internet terminology, a troll is someone who comes into an established community such as an online discussion forum, and posts inflammatory, rude or offensive messages designed intentionally to annoy and antagonize the existing members or disrupt the flow of discussion.\"

IMHO my question is relevant to the \'general\' forum. That comment could be considered \'inciteful\' if anything.

Hey Alexander, welcome to the forums :) I would agree that this is not trolling, more a matter of personal taste. And a tip: you didn\'t have to do another post to correct your typo, just edit the last one :)

Happy painting

Thanks

Thanks for the advice. I have been an active viewer of the forums for years. I just rarely post comments because of issues like this.

SSSSHHHHH!!!

Just keep this between us, but I think the general artistry & sculpting of Rakham minis is some of the best I have ever seen. No name, Darn forgot the avatar !

I greatly admire Rackham sculpts and have quite a few. The more I look at the two company\'s stuff side by side they seem to be not really competing against each other artistically. Rackham is very graceful, almost art noveau and sublime, and GW is much more cartoonish in it\'s execution. I like them both for their respective approaches. I prefer the GW Orks to Rackham because the GW ones are more cartoony. Where as Rackham I like for the grace and beauty.

Hi, Alexander, and welcome. I see you\'ve been a member here quite a while, but only just started posting.

Each mini line has it\'s proponents and opponents, which leads me to the trolling. remark. If you\'ve been reading these fora lately, there has been a LOT of GW bashing, price-comparing and so on. Frankly, many of the regulars here are sick and tired of it, and even though your comment was quite innocent, it was unintentionally rather inciteful. Watch what happens here when GW announce yet another price increase. :D

However, you are still quite welcome around here, and welcome to comment on GW too. :)

Rackham

Graceful is exactly the right description. I am a painter and not a gamer so I think that might be why I prefer one side over the other. Rackham\'s painting staff is truly inspirational, and has pushed my skills farther than anything I have seen elsewhere.

Top answer ;)

Every mini company has its good points and bad points and once you have removed the politics of the actual company, i think good discussion could be had as to the merits of the sculpting styles.

I wouldnt like to choose between the two although right now I would say I err more towards Rackham right now. Especially after seeing their new Mid Nor bits!! And ofc ourse the new minis for Cadwallon *drool*

The GW stuff is all getting very samey for me...

I generally (as in almost always) prefer Rackham over GW design wise. But I can\'t say I find Rackham\'s casting superior. I have more or less the same amount of Rackham as GW figs (maybe a few more Rackham)... but I think castingflaw count between the 2 Rackham beats GW... as in having more. Maybe I\'m just out of luck there, but I have a few castingflaws with Rackham (some severe) but none to speak of in my gw figs. Also the soft metal of Rackham does break/snap/tear more easily then the GW one

I don\'t like being pushed...

;)

I have several hundred GW minis, but only about a dozen Rackham. I may some day actually paint the GW (yeah, right) but I doubt I will ever attempt a Rackham. They intimidate me. :(

In fact, I sent my most beautiful piece over to EricJ to see what he could do with it, and he was intimadated as well. That does not bode well for me. lol

I still intend to paint the Ogre Dragonpaint sent me for ME5, however, I\'m just waiting until I get my stuff out of storage. That will be my first Rackham, so we will see what we will see.

The casting quality of Rackham is better than GW?

In my experience, Rackham casts are aweful. The pewter is so soft everything bends and breaks. Both wolfen/devourer minis I\'ve gotten have had clumps of metal that had to be filed off and I\'m no sculptor so I couldn\'t really fix it either.

rackham make an excellent stuff, of course. but I think many of their anatomy are strange and not correct, even if we consider their own style.
GW is a huge machine, currently a larger part of the range is bad or just correct. but GW get some of the better 30mm sculptors imho, as Brian Nelson and Jes Goodwin who made minis better or as good as any rackham piece. now, you have to look at some other companies, I\'m really fan of Ilyad Games models, as I consider JAG maybe as the best sculptor in these scales (28/35mm). Kev White (hasslefree) is doing marvelous job too.

I have no idea which is better. I can truly appreciate Rackham sculpts and the painting is unbelivable, but nothing ever \'jumps\' out at me and tells me I must buy it. GW on the other hand, does this constantly.

All I know is it is a great time to be a mini lover.

GW will always have a special place in my heart since my Orc army were the first minis I\'ve ever worked on. I love the rackham minis also from what I\'ve seen of them on CMoN and will definitely be ordering some eventually... First I\'m trying out some Hasslefree and Spyglass. I\'m sure I\'ll have my favorite models eventually, but I don\'t think based on manufacturer.

Not even the Red Lioness? If any single mini has ever told me to buy it, it was the Red Lioness. And what about Mira the Reckless / Misericord?

As for GW, well, it\'s not just that the Dark Elves have a soft spot with me, they truly have some of the best minis that GW have produced.
